In a state of deep, deep fascination
Neil Young. Just seeing the way his fans love him and get excited about his music makes me even more befuddled. I never could see the appeal, and his voice can be grating. And what's with the 'dirty rocker' getup he has going. Everytime I see him he looks like he stepped out a city alley.

I will agree with this outside of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young & a few of his solo hits of the late 1960's - early 1970's ("Cinnamon Girl" & "Heart Of Gold" and maybe a few others).

To me, Neil Young post his early 1970's hits also developed a rather horrid singing voice, as well.

Young really needs to think about hanging it up, already. He's one of these older singers that doesn't know when to quit (and in that regard, at least Barbra Streisand knew better and unlike many I give her kudos for that -- not to compare Young and Streisand, but I hope people know what I mean here?)

And in all of this negativity about Young, both by me and you, newdawnfade -- I used to be a skeptic about Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and the line they used in regards to Young of, "A southern man doesn't need him around, anyway." But yesterday when I heard that song come on the local Classic Rock station here in Atlanta, I found myself cheering on Skynyrd!! :D

Well, as one of Neil Young's die-hard fans, I'll just say, his voice ain't pretty and neither is he but he's not considered the Godfather of Grunge for nothing. :D

Besides, I think 99% percent of Neil's strength as an artist comes from his lyrics. I guess I can identify with his lyrics a lot. Love his sense of humor, justice and view on life. When God Made Me off of his latest, Prairie Wind, is just an awesome song. The opening line of He Was The King made me laugh - "The last time I saw Elvis, he was shooting at a color tv...."

No doubt Neil Youngs voice can grate, but it work's for me. I think it's either a love it or hate it, kind of like Bob Dylan.

As far as "hanging it up" Neil is still putting out relavant music, as shown by his latest disc. He is an artist that you need to hear more of thsn what is played on your typical rock station.

And my favorite thing about Neil, is ability to play a powerful acoustic set, by himself, or play the dirtiest, cruchiest, feedabck laden rockers when performing with Crazy Horse. and have both stand equally in their brilliance.

Exactly! He's very versatile and he's great at it all.

I saw him at the Boston Garden w/ crazy horse, and then a few months later I saw his solo acoutstic tour, I was blown away both times, and is close to being my favorite live performer.

I never really cared for Radiohead until I gave them "a good honest listen" now I really like them.

At first I couldn't understand why the White Stripes were so great- now I love them. I gave them a honest listen from both a listener and musician standpoint and found thier music quite brilliant. ( Still can't really get into Meg's drumming but it is effective for their style)

But I do think Meg is a hottie!! :D Post that pic of her again Martin!! YOWZA!

I used to get slammed all the time for not being a Neil Young fan (you must remember NDF!) I too could never understand the appeal.

But then again- You and I used to get slammed for being Nirvana fans (that I know you remember!)

I still take grief for liking rap - I love Eminem and 2Pac. My buds are always on me for that!
