Aerosmith were forced to cancel plans for their show in Istanbul, Turkey tonight due to a horrible mining accident in the nearby town of Soma. At least 200 local miners were killed and hundreds more were trapped after an explosion occurred in the mine.

In an official statement, lead singer Steven Tyler expressed his regret and offered condolences to those whose lives were lost. "My heartfelt prayers go out to those who have died, those who are still trapped, and their families. We are holding the people of Turkey close to our hearts and respecting the 3 days of mourning for a saddened nation."

Lead guitarist Joe Perry echoed Tyler's sentiment. "I feel profound sorrow for the workers and their families who have been killed or injured in this terrible disaster," he said. "As soon as I heard the news, I called my wife in America and, me and my family's hearts and prayers go out to the families and workers who were killed or injured. Words can't express the sorrow that we feel."

The proposed show at the Istanbul Technical University was supposed to be the first the band had ever played in that country.

I saw that on the news. I would hate to be a miner or be married to one. What an awful job. :(

Season Of Wither...

I've been tracking the event. Sobering... Makes you think about your own job, your plight, your family and everything. 200 and counting... Horrible, just horrible. Here's hoping they rescue those trapped inside soon enough.

The band did what is appropriate... For all their foibles, Tyler and co. are human. Props to them as people.

You couldn't get me underground for any money, although I realize for many people it's either mine or go hungry. It will never be safe, that old adage "Nature abhors a vacuum" comes to mind, and explosions due to methane and other gases is always a danger.

Props to Aerosmith for doing the right thing, they can always reschedule and play in Turkey sometime down the road.

Good and caring move by the band, maybe they'll re-arrange it and make it a benefit show for the bereaved families?

Closer to 300 dead now confirmed, though it's expected to go much higher, certainly one of the worst disasters of it's kind in recent history. Polish government are getting blamed I was hearing, though I'm not yet sure why.

It's baffling that well into the 21st century many countries still need people to go miles underground, into hell-on-earth death-traps full of gas and danger, for their energy needs, same as they were doing 150 years ago, nothing has basically changed, coal is filthy, disgusting stuff that pollutes, but once you actually get it out of the ground, it's cheap.

Very sad story unfolding here.

Aerosmith did the right thing by cancelling.

I disagree. What they should have done was perform....give a condolence tribute LIVE.......then donate the proceeds to the injured & deceased.

Their PR missed that one big time!

^^Depends where you are playing Magic, Turkey is not the most 'civilized' place, no offense to anyone of Turkish ancestry intended.

In fact on the news today organized labour has gone on a general strike to protest the lack of regulations/safety for miners and other dangerous occupations. This could lead to violent disorder and the riot police/army being called out.

Well, in that case, if the area is turning violent with protest, I don't blame the Boys for haulin' ass outta there.
