Over the past decade or so, Ted Nugent has gotten more publicity for his conservative political views than his music. Earlier this month, Nugent wrote an open letter to vice President Joe Biden about his views on gun control. However, Dee Snider recalls a time when the “Motor City Madman” wasn’t so thrilled with the idea of carrying a gun. In a new interview, the Twisted Sister frontman recalled Nugent’s unwillingness to fight in the Vietnam War.

“Ted’s always been a gun-toting conservative,” he told Noisecreep. “But what gets me is that he was actually a draft dodger! I mean, to the point where he didn’t bathe for a week, and vomited on himself to deliberately avoid the draft. I totally understand why he did that, but all of these Republicans who love Ted don’t seem to know or remember that too well. It’s crazy that he’s become one of the voices of Conservative America even though he was a draft dodger. If you don’t believe me, Google it.”

Snider is repeating the oft-told interview Nugent gave to High Times in 1977. “I got my physical notice 30 days prior to,” Nugent said. “Well, on that day I ceased cleansing my body. No more brushing my teeth, no more washing my hair, no baths, no soap, no water. Thirty days of debris build. I stopped shavin’ and I was 18, had a little scraggly beard, really looked like a hippie…Then two weeks before, I stopped eating any food with nutritional value…Then a week before, I stopped going to the bathroom. I did it in my pants. poop, piss the whole shot. My pants got crusted up.”

The result was, in his words, a “big juicy 4-F,” which meant that he was unfit for military service and thus ineligible for the draft. Nugent has since disavowed those words, stating that he had a student deferment and that he made up the story to fool the pro-marijuana publication.

However, Snopes has found that, while Nugent did have a deferment, it expired in 1968. He failed a physical a year later and was classified 1-Y (‘qualified for service only in time of war or national emergency”), which was changed to 4-F in 1971.

I heard in another interview that he admits to being a copout at the time because as he said he was young, stupid, and cared for nothing at the time except music and chicks and didn't have the mature disciplined attitude to be in the military at the time. I think regardless if you agree with him on issues or not that not only has most youths done and said things that they were later ashamed of but especially during the late 60's and early 70's.

So if one wants to be fair about things they should use solid arguments if they have them to counter his stances and not red herrings or ad homiinems which imho is what some of his opponents on certain issues are doing when they reach back like this to try to say he is a "hypocrite" or that because of that fleeting moment in his youth so far back somehow makes any of his stances wrong.

This is not an argument for ted but just trying to be fair and objective. It's easy, cheap, but all too often too tempting to find something about somebody and to use it to distract from the actual debate on whether something is right or wrong.

Let's for example look at dee himself who fought against the pmrc which was lead by tipper gore who btw claimed to be "christian" and argued that something lewd or not should be freedom of speech and expression. We all know realistically that people like dee was trying to shock to well make a little money and as he said himself prior to the whole pmrc thing that "bad publicity is better than no publicity at all" ie it creates awareness of what your doing which = money. Here's the twist, when asked by tipper if he believed in god dee answered "yes and said he "has christian values". which at the time he thought was making himself look like a good guy under the persona but to a degree all it did was get him labeled as a "hypocrite". Tipper imho tricked him for a lack of a better term and used his being a "hypocrite" as a way to stray/distract from the issue at hand to "win" the debate. It's ironic now that dee may be using the same tactic that tipper nailed him with on a more recent and relevant issue rather than a slacker 18 year old nobody in 1968 yet dee and others seem to have conveniently forgot about that.

What about when rosie o donell was crusading against guns but was busted for having body guards who were private citizens and that it's ok for you to do that and convenient for a rich person but what about the average citizen who can't afford body guards ?

Again, not making an argument either way but this old story of ted that keeps getting used to haunt him from time to time by his critics smells of what I've said before which is an ad hominem or a red herring. We have to beware of trying to argue about politics because too many people regardless of what "side" they are on have had subjective and bias ideals bred into them instead being fair and objective and all it will lead to is bad feelings.

When I saw this I at first didn't want to touch it because it could open up a can of worms but then thought that maybe just maybe I could warn people that it could and to be cautious. There seems to be too many nice people here to have bad feelings toward one another because of crap and non issues like this and I've stayed off sites like this for years because I've seen stuff like this ruin friendships. I was on a site that had a vote on whether or not to have a political forum and I was one of the few that voted against it because I knew what was going to happen and sure enough I was right. After years with people getting along it only took a matter of months for the site to go to hell after the forum was installed.

People do that all the time, except for the walking around part. They're not old enough for that yet.

I studied on this for a while, and I can't think of a single reason that any person would want to get anywhere near Rosie.

I like Ted when he's got a guitar in his hands, I don't listen to his crack-pot politics anymore than I do Bono's.

But I didn't realize he was a hypocrite, granted he was young but deeds will always speak louder than words. Wouldn't be the first "celebrity" to enjoy what freedoms America offers but didn't want to take up arms if you were one of the unfortunates called upon to serve.

Sometimes it's better to keep quiet than shoot your mouth off and have the past rise up and bite you on the ass.

The past can't be changed but people can. I don't see how he's a hypocrite now or at least a proven one because of a fleeting moment so many years ago as a punk kid. And I don't see how that would make what he talks about wrong or right and if we all decided to keep our traps shut on our view points because of something stupid we did as a youth most of us wouldn't have a voice about what we believe in even if we matured and changed the way we think or would handle things. Again I'm not defending ted but fairness because I see it as a cheap shot to pull out an ad hominem by his opponents which shouldn't be used against nobody regardless of what side of an issue you are on. Unfortunately it works on the masses anymore for too many people imho lack objectiveness and common sense along with having short attention spans. Again, just trying to be objective and fair and this will be my last remark on what is really a non issue that was made into one.

Yea, I bet Dee didn't do a thing at 18 that he isn't proud to admit now.
