(VHND) It all started with a quote from*Eddie Van Halen; “In November, we’ll hit Japan, and in the new year, we’ll*possibly do something special, but I can’t talk about it.”

This quote kicked off rampant rumors that “something special” might mean that Van Halen could be the band considered to play the Superbowl halftime show next February. Keep in mind, rumors of Van Halen playing the Superbowl*are nothing new – their name pops up annually as a potential performer.

It seems to be Van Halen’s*protocol*never to address rumors. We at the Van Halen News Desk have never commented on the Superbowl rumors either, as they have never been anything other than*fan’s wishful thinking. *This year was originally no different – we weren’t planning on addressing the rumors without first hearing something*either*way from our trusted inside sources. But wouldn’t you know, our sources now tell us that David Lee Roth is indeed going to publically address the Superbowl rumors within the next few days. Now, that sounds interesting! (Dare we say it sounds “promising”?)

We’ll speculate that if (and that’s a big “if”!) Van Halen actually ends up playing the Superbowl next year, we think they would almost certainly*tour*right afterwords. The Superbowl is a humongous opportunity for publicity*on the biggest television sports event in the US, so it*wouldn’t make sense*for the band not to tour afterwords.

In fact, 114 million people tuned to in to watch Madonna perform at the halftime show this year. The last 3 Superbowls now sit at one, two, and three on the most viewed programs list in TV history. And as David Lee Roth has said, on any given day, you can walk into any*hockey*arena or football*stadium*throughout the country and you’ll hear Van Halen’s music blaring to get the crowd pumped up. So Van Halen and the Superbowl would go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Could 2013 be another huge year for Van Halen?*That would really be something, considering the fact that 2012 is such a stellar year in their carreer, with the release of their*critically*acclaimed*masterpiece,*A Different Kind Of Truth, and their hugely successful 48 city US tour which just wrapped up last week.

Well, VH at the SuperBowl would be a bazillion times better than the Black Eyed Peas, Usher or that hag Madonna.

Also very predictable! How many rock acts have there been since the Janet Jackson boobie incident? :bonk:

I think it would be cool if David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar got together and did a duet at the Superbowl. That would be a trip.

..and just to be funny, my twisted sense of humour, have them do like "Puttin' On The Ritz" :grinthumb

Gotta love the hype...sorry to rain on their parade but the Superbowl is not the most watched event on television, the World Cup and the Euro draw more viewers. They most likely meant in the US market...but forgot to qualify it.

Van Halen...I am not going to speculate anymore on what their plans are, as usual this seems to fall into Eddie's lap at least that is the way it looks to me.

And MP I would rather see Sammy and Dave or Eddie on that new Discovery or History Channel show about "Jousting"...throw down the gauntlet and put the animosity to rest once and for all.:heheh:

Do you really think the Superbowl would take the chance of Van Halen canceling on them? I think not. :nw:

^^Indeed they are slowly but surely moving into "Axl" territory with all the drama surrounding their tour which mystifies me they have released a very good record which was well received, putting on a good concert for their old and new fans and then "Poof!" the wheels seem to have fallen off.

If this turns out to be linked to Eddie's health and inability to physically perform for an extended time then I will understand how everything has panned out.

If it is Eddie's health then I think fans would be much more forgiving of all of the cancellations, but somehow I doubt that's the case. Just my opinion on it though.

Can you imagine all the news threads on the forum if that happened? We'd have to make a new section. :heheh:
