I was never much of a Bowie fan myself. He was very...out there lol. But he did write the ever-so-awesome "All the Young Dudes" for Mott the Hoople, so he's okay in my book

would you say it is the guitar riff that makes it a masterpiece?

Well I was talking about the album more so than the song itself. "Ziggy Stardust" is one Bowie's most famous but in my book it is not my favorite. It's not even my favorite song on that album for that matter.
Though to answer your question (sort of) I do think it has a great guitar part.

I remember seeing the Forgotten Rebels cover the Ziggy Stardust song a few times & instead of singing "Making Love with his ego..." Comedic lead singer Mickey DeSadist sang "Making Love to his Beagle..."
