31.- The Velvet Underground

The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in New York City. First active from 1964 to 1973, their best-known members were Lou Reed and John Cale, who both went on to find success as solo artists. Although experiencing little commercial success while together, the band is often cited by many critics as one of the most important and influential groups of the 1960s.[1] An often-repeated statement, usually attributed to Brian Eno or Peter Buck, is that "The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band."

Andy Warhol managed the Velvet Underground and it was the house band at his studio, the Factory, and his Exploding Plastic Inevitable events. The provocative lyrics of some of the band's songs gave a nihilistic outlook to some of their music.

#32 The Wipers

They are misunderstood, mistreated, and / or just plain unknown, The Wipers should be mentioned in the first breaths of great punk rock bands / bands period as well as their mastermind / guitarist Greg Sage being mentioned when talking about great guitarists and songwriters.

The Wipers' impact on music is much greater than most people would think. They had a huge impact on the "grunge" scene and several alternative rockers became vocal about their admiration for Sage. The most notable of these people was Kurt Cobain who wound up covering Wipers songs with Nirvana (Return Of The Rat and D-7.) Cobain also asked Sage to open for them on tours, but since Sage never wanted to be opportunistic and never wanted to draw attention to himself he politely turned down the offers. Sage would also cite the reason that the timing was never right since he had trouble securing a bassist that would be willing to learn over 100 songs and tour to little fanfare.

Great band that was highly influential, but sadly unknown.

Pick up the boxset that Sage released on his own record label. It is a three for one package that contains their first 3 albums which are all classics / masterpieces.

Gentle Giant:

Eclectic, neurotic, irritating, difficult to get into or simply breathtaking?

It began with the Schulman brothers forming Simon Dupree and the Big Sound.
Gentle Giant was formed 1970 adding drummer Martin Smith, Kerry Minear and Gary Green.
Trademarks of Gentle Giant are their arrangements, using counterpoint, polyphony and multipart singing. Their first album was released in 1970 and overall had a rock feeling. The pure rock went away a bit with the following release Acquiring The Taste. They achieved success with their following studio albums up to Interview. After that they tried an easier and more mellow sound to attract greater audiences. Although The Missing Piece, Giant for a Day and Civilian are not bad their ‘new’ sound was not an overall success.

Their best line-up?

Gary Green - Guitars, percussion
Kerry Minnear - All keyboards, vibraphone, percussion, cello, Moog, lead and backing vocals
Derek Shulman - Lead vocals, alto saxophone
Philip Shulman - Saxophones, trumpet, mellophone, lead and backing vocals
Raymond Shulman - Bass violin, guitar, percussion, vocals (note typographical error, "bass violin")
John Weathers - Drums, percussion, xylophone.

A band not easy to get into but once you’re in , you do not wanna leave the wonderful and intricate music of this band!!
