One of the big three in the British Heavy Rock scene of the early 70's these guys have influenced some of the biggest bands that followed in their wake.
Raw, ferocious, minimalistic, honest...Iggy burst onto the scene screaming and clawing his way across the stage. Arguably the most influential frontman since Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop invented punk by taking rock 'n roll to new extremes. You have to hand it to the Stooges, they held the sound together and kept everything tight even with an unapologetic unpredictable wild man leading them to the brink of absolute chaos.

Interestingly the plan was to form a band with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice from Vanilla Fudge, Jeff beck and Rod Stewart. Jeff had a motorcycle accident and Rod joined the Faces. Tim and Carmine recruited guitar player Jim McCarty from Detroit Wheels and vocalist Rusty Day from The Amboy Dukes. And a Cactus was born!!
This line-up lasted three albums. Jim left the band in 1971.
Sadly Rusty Day (real name Russell Edward Davidson) passed away in 1982.
Cactus play a mix of boogie/blues and rock. In 2006 Bogert, Appice, McCarty joined by singer Jimmy Kunes and harmonica player Jimmy Kunes made Cactus V.
I started to listen to Cactus when I was 15 and I haven’t stopped yet. Real good band!
Aside from their first three albums the compilation Barely Contained: The Studio Sessions is very good.

Nikki Sixx, Vince Neal, Mick Mars, and Tommy Lee brought the USA alive with Glam Metal. This sleazy group is still rockin', making them one of the most popular bands of the 80's, and innovators for all things Glam.
Van Halen is an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. The band acheived success after the release of its debut album Van Halen (1978). As of 2007, Van Halen has sold 80 million albums worldwide and has had the most #1 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Van Halen is the 19th best-selling band/artist of all time with sales of over 56 million albums in the United States alone, and is one of five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. In 1999, the RIAA certified their debut album diamond for ten million in U.S. sales.
The band is also known for the drama surrounding the exits of former members. The multiple exits of lead singers David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone were surrounded in controversy and press coverage, including numerous conflicting press statements between the former singers and the band. Following their 2004 concert tour the band was on a hiatus from the public until September 2007, when new bassist Wolfgang Van Halen’s place was confirmed and Roth reunion rumors began to re-surface, both events coinciding with the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction on March 12, 2007. After years of speculation, Van Halen began a tour with Roth across North America in 2007 and into 2008. On December 26, 2011, Van Halen announced a tour for 2012, and released their first album in 14 years, A Different Kind of Truth, on February 7.
'Cos for me they are one of the most important bands that helped create that Southern Sound. They gave us some of the best tunes from the 70's and lived the life. They still command so much respect here in the UK.
The Pretenders... I really enjoyed the original line-up from the first two LPs. They combined punk and pop with an edge. Hynde still keeps the band name going albeit without Farndon and Honeyman-Scott both of whom has passed on.
Up from the bogs...this quartet played rock and roll with a more than a touch of Southern feel or “swamp” rock if you will. The irony is that all are from Northern Cali. They weren’t just about bayous either by incorporating country and R&B strains within their music. CCR also displayed some creativity with long jams such as “Susie Q” and “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” to dispel the notion that they were merely a singles band.
