hawk11 gave me this idea from his poll. The list contains 12 guitarists who are from the "classic" progressive rock era. Your three favs.

Steve Howe(Yes, solo)
Robert Fripp(King Crimson, Giles, Giles and Fripp, solo)
Martin Barre(Jethro Tull)
Jan Akkerman(Focus, Brainbox, solo)
David Gilmour(Pink Floyd, solo)
Steve Hackett(Genesis, solo)
Steve Hillage(Gong, Arzachel, Khan)
John McLaughlin(Miles Davis, Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahaishnu Orchestra, solo)
Pat Metheny(solo)
Allan Holdsworth(Tempest, Soft Machine, Gong, Bruford, Nucleus, UK, solo)
Steve Morse(Dixie Dregs)
Al Di Meola(Return To Forever, solo)

I don't know if I could pick just three and live with myself Joe...that is a tremendous list of hall of famers.

I'll think about this one for a bit before voting.

Voted only for Jan Akkerman as he's only my favourite prog guitarist from that list. :/

Al Di Meola for his work on 3 terrific Return to Forever albums and some of his solo work.

David Gilmour

Martin Barre, people just should listen moren intensely to this amazing musician.

( honorable mention to Robert Fripp, he did set an amazing standard )

^^My list is the same as Groovy's.

Steve Howe
Martin Barre
David Gilmour

No particular order, and as far as Jazz Fusion guitarists, I would take Al Di Meola.
