Smashing Pumpkins mainman Billy Corgan says it’s time for for rock music to get dangerous again, because the world around us has more become dangerous than it’s been in decades.

And he says the reason artists aren’t responding is that the Facebook era has made too many people scared to move away from the mainstream.

Corgan, poised to release new Pumpkins album Oceania, tells Antiquiet: “We’re all insecure in our own ways, most of us. You’ve got a Facebook with a few hundred friends. If you do something truly radical are you ready to withstand the 40 negative comments? Most people aren’t – so they’re getting peer-pressured at levels they don’t even realise.”

As a result, he says, people are more likely not to share ideas they might have shared in the past. “It’s the same thing with culture,” he continues. “I’m just willing to say it, and deal with the 40 negative comments.”

The frontman believes he’s able to understand the position more than most because he’s spent his career playing with the idea of “conceptual identity” that’s now being foisted upon artists and fans alike. “Meanwhile the real me is standing behind it all,” he says. “Now I’m strong enough that I don’t need a mask; I’m just myself. I’m 15 pounds overweight, I’ve got crooked teeth, I’ve got a funny voice – but I’m ****ing good at what I do.”

Corgan insists more of the same attitude is required to ensure music doesn’t lose the ability to challenge authority. “I still think rock’n'roll done correctly is one of the most dangerous things in the world to the systems of power. It’s the ultimate viral concept.

“Go back to 1956 with Elvis. That was much more a mellow and serene world in many ways, beyond the nuclear holocaust that was always waiting. Elvis was en electrifying figure: he ****ed stuff up – the culture, concepts of masculinity, sexuaity. He ****ed stuff up just like the Beatles did.

“You don’t need an army. You don’t need a tank. You don’t need a bayonet. You just need a really good idea. Just like Tom Morello has the quote on his guitar from Woodie Guthrie: ‘This guitar is a ****ing weapon – this guitar kills fascists.’

“Love kills fascists. And when music is so ****ing iTunes friendly-cuddly it makes me want to puke. Where is that voicing in the greater collective voices? Why don’t we have that any more?”

And Corgan says that’s why, love him or hate him, it’s essential for him to keep making music. “This ****ing voice kills fascists. That’s the way I look at it.”

Sooty will love this, although he probably already knows how Billy feels about the current state of the music culture as a whole.

I do agree with him about the lack of "chutzpah" in the world of rock and roll now, it can be a tremendous force in the world as he already noted in his comments.

We could use a band like "The Clash" again, they never steered away from controversy.

It's not much different than I said in the Billy Corgan Vs. Radiohead thread LG. Billy Corgan has just joined the line of old, eccentric, whiny assholes like Axl Rose, Gene Simmons, Sammy Hagar, etc. where they pander for attention and shit out their mouths whiny, the world has left rock behind statements. Musically I'll back up Corgans shit but I won't agree the world needs to go back to retarded sex, drugs and Rock N' Roll cliches and rebellion shit. :nw: Now I now what KISS fans feel like when their band leader spats out stupid shit and they just want to say "Shut the **** up and play your music! :heheh:

And I'm sure the Pumpkins faced their share of criticism back in the day too so he needs to keep that in mind. Its good to see a fan who doesn't go along with what their idol says blindly though. :)

Seems like all it takes these days for a headline is to make some stupid remark and piss someone off, otherwise we wouldnt be hearing from a lot of these musicians and celebrities anymore because they're not doing much besides running their mouths. :D

I think he's talking about the free spirit that was prevailent in rock and roll rather than the sex drugs blah blah periphery. There was a time when bands rose through sheer grass roots following (Black Sabbath anyone?) almost in spite of record company/corporate disdain.

Now the corporation manufacture such 'rebels' and a lot of the public gobble it up.

In this case he's still making music I'm happy with. I just wonder why from 40 on (not all but a lot) people seem to become whiny old men with sticks up their wrinkled asses. I'm not going to ever be that way about things that are current or new. I'll take that to my grave. As a person Corgan sounds like an absolute dick.

I don't care about the backstory of most bands manufactured or not. I try not to learn too much about the bands otherwise it becomes less about the music. If I learn anything it means I've really gotten into the band hardcore and I'm just looking for details. At that point I'm already hooked on the music and nothing will make me stop enjoying it. The music itself should be the absolute factor in whether you like it. Music plays/you connect/end of story. That's my angle at least. It doesn't need to change the world outside of my own personal shell.

^^That's why I used the Clash as my example, their songs were not about Sex Drugs Rock 'n Roll, they had deeper meaning and reflected the things going on in the world at the time.

I think that's part of what Billy is talking about, if he is longing for attention...well I guess any publicity is good publicity.;)

Well to me deepness has to do with whether the artists portrays any conviction through their emotions in their music. I hear plenty of that on the surface. If we all had a link to peoples brains we'd probably find a lack of authenticity in even the most supposed hardcore anti-establishment artist. The thing is we can't judge authenticity from our standpoint. We have no clue. It's like politicians. It's really whoever sways us in believing they are legit. A teenybopper chick singing about their puppy could be coming from a higher place of conviction than that snot nosed anti-establishment punk for all we now. It's what we as a listener connect to in the music. It has nothing to do to me with what some pretentious dick says he's representing. I liked what Billy had to say about his album and what he was trying to do with it before he tried playing almighty guru with musical authenticity and other artist.

Here's my tribute to the whiny bastard:

Back in my day we had to travel 3,000 miles in the snow, in the pouring rain, over tacks and hot coals just to get a record deal! *Snarf* *Snarf*
