ComfortablyNumb
Unquestionable Presence
Blue Record
Released October 13, 2009
Genres Progressive metal, Sludge metal
Georgia based Baroness' second full length ablum Blue Record is a melodic, punky sludge super-fuzzed out acid rock album, but their range of dynamics has grown immensely. ‘A Horse Called Golgotha’ and ‘Jake Leg’ weave flowing layers and grandiose melodies amid delightful power chord progressions and Thin Lizzy / Mastodon-ish guitar wails. It's really hard to say exactly what the new guitarist Pete Adams has brought to the band after replacing drummer Allen Blickle's brother Brian, but the band's established blend of Southern sludge riffs, druggy instrumental journeys, and melodic interludes, all propelled by a particularly thudding drum sound and held together by John Baizley's hoarse but clean vocals. John Baizley's is the one who did the cover art (which is his job actually besides the band. He is notable for his album cover and t-shirt art for bands including Kylesa, Pig Destroyer, Darkest Hour, Daughters, Skeletonwitch, Torche, Cursed, Black Tusk, Kvelertak, Vitamin X, Flight of the Conchords) The album is stronger than the previous full length Red album. The transition from the almost Moody Blues-like "Steel That Sleeps the Eye" into the crunching hard rock epic "Swollen and Halo" is just one example of how Baroness is able to meld moods through technique and exceptional composition. This is a great album. One of my favorites that was released in '09 along with Mastodon's Crack The Skye.
