What is your opinion of their music with and without drums?
My short answer would be I don’t mind the drums.

I do prefer the instrumental pieces that focus on the cellos.

It occurred to me that a way of looking at them, especially the early work is as a very heavy (and amazing!) chamber group!

The tracks where the cellos don’t seem to have as much of a chance to shine for me are the ones with the guest vocalists. I find vocals to be a distraction when it comes to Apocalyptica ... but then again I do like most of the songs with vocals on Worlds Collide as far a fully fleshed out songs go.

I think Helden with Till Lindemann is on the awesome side. I don’t know why I didn’t take a closer look at the liner notes first but when I went looking for an English translation of the lyrics I discovered it was David Bowie’s Heroes!

TBH: I love these guys with or without drums.

Not much into metal......but I like the sound of a cello.
I saw the videos by these guys on another forum......interesting approach and style.

BTW...the album Red by King Crimson has cello on several tracks and is considered by some music critics to be the 'heaviest lp of all time' . In 2001, Q magazine named Red as one of the "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time.
