Both bands were eclectic and could it off with panache. However, VH were so coool too. Huge love to May, Mercury et al. BUT VH in their prime (‘78 - ‘85) were untouchable. Jamie’s Cryin’ isn’t in my top five VH songs but it has lots of the ingredients that made VH such a classic band: Dave’s witty vocals which had that bittersweet Motownesque (apparently) contrast of ‘up’ music and unhappy lyrical narrative; Ed’s guitar (natch), Mike Anthony’s Beach Boys-style harmonies, and the tight Mike’n Al rhythm section thrusting the song forward. Virtuosity, great songwriting, spunky attitude and the coolest image - that was Van Halen in their prime.
