Gino Vannelli was born in Montreal, Quebec on June 16 1952. Vannelli signed his first recording contract with RCA using the pseudonym Vann Elli, but went on to study music at McGill University. After moving to Los Angelas with his brother Joe in the early 70’s, he got his first recording contract after waiting outside Herb Alpert’s gate for an audition. Alpert liked what he heard and signed Vannelli to A&M Records. Vannelli released his first album, Cray Life, in 1973. There were no hits, but the album did spawn the fan favourite Crazy Life.

His next album, Powerful People was released in 1974. The song People Gotta Move reached #22 on the American Billboard chart. The last track, Poor Happy Jimmy, is a tribute to Jim Croce, who died in an airplane accident a year earlier.

His 1978 album Brother To Brother produced the hit I just Wanna Stop which reached # 4 in The US and # 1 in Canada, as well as fan favourites Wheels Of Life and The River Must Flow.

It's a great album. Me and my wife have a date with Gino next week. I've never seen him before but if his Live In Montreal DVD is any indication, it should be a great show.

I'm not a massive fan of Gino's, but he did release a real gem in the 70's. My sister bought the 45 rpm single of "People Gotta Move" which was the first song I heard by him. Years later my brother bought the MFSL vinyl edition of "Powerful People", probably one of the best sounding releases they ever did. Another tidbit about this album there is no lead guitar at all, and you don't even realize it at first. I know Brother to Brother was his breakthrough hit album, but for my money Powerful People is the strongest set of songs he ever did.

Think I'll play it later today.

I have to give mention to Storm at Sunup and Gist of the Gemini. Two of my fave Gino listens. The War Suite form Gist is especially well done (side two of the lp). Gotta love Jay Graydon on guitar!

My first Vannelli record that I bought was Powerful People. I liked all the keyboard work. I think the writing on Storm at Sunup was a natural progression from Powerful People. Gist of the Gemini represented a galvanizing recording for this band in this genre. They kind of switched gears (away from a rock style) after this release.

There's some interesting band/orchestra work on the A Pauper in Paradise release.

^^Don't know much about either of those albums, but Gist of the Gemini sounds interesting, I'll see if I can find a streaming version and check it out Yesfan2000.
