BBC Radio 1 Tommy Vance UK Top 30 Rock Chart (5th June 1992) - YouTube

Absolutely nailed it with that post - I think Tommy Vance played a big part in my getting into rock at an early(ish) age...his Friday night rock show on Radio 1 in the UK was something I never missed as a kid, think it was on from around 9pm to midnight, just wall-to-wall great music, it was the first place I ever heard stuff like Floyd's The Wall and bands like Scorpions, AC/DC, Van Halen, Rainbow etc. His show even sometimes used to carry live rock from UK festivals like Castle Donnington and Knebworth.

I remember him well.

Tracks I remember him playing:

Heavy Metal Daze by Manowar
Shell Shock by Manowar
Dancing Madly Backwards by Captain Beyond
Get Up, Get Angry by The B'zz
Strange Dreams by Frank Marino
Juggernaut by Frank Marino
The Big Money by Rush
Hush by Deep Purple (Ian Gillan version)
Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple
Night of the Demon by Demon
Xero the Hero by Black Sabbath
Credo by Fish
2112 by Rush
Awaken by Yes
Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath
Eyesight to the Blind by Eric Clapton
Double Vision by Foreigner
City of Love by Yes
Different Germany by Ian Anderson
Lovedrive by Scorpions
Bored with Russia by Budgie

Tommy had a competition between new bands called Rock Wars. I remember a group called Gypsy Tarts winning. They were good. There was also a weekly competition where you had to spot the connection between three tracks (sent in by listeners). He used Van Der Graaf Generator as his theme music.

Tommy Vance was brilliant...and as you say played some top rock/metal tunes. So good....it stopped me going out on friday nights !!
I did a feature on him on the "A=z of NWOBHM " thread.....he really did contribute to the up and coming scene in the 80s playing bands like Iron Maiden etc
He introduced us to some great bands,..STRYPER,METALLICA come to mind, etc also some more obscure bands that deserved more but you never heard of again like THE WILD STRAWBERRIES...[ Anyone remember them ? ]

Alan "Fluff" Freeman was brilliant too......had a great passion for prog , but not afraid to play a bit of metal...or even punk in its early days. I used to listen to him Saturday afternoons. Eternally grateful for him giving airplay to bands like Scorpions,Starz and Kiss to a UK audience.
Then there was John Peel , another legend sadly missed who played just about anything.....rock,punk,gothic,indie etc

I listened to Fluff every Saturday afternoon, come hell or high water. It was my education and probably explains why I turned out so badly!

Fluff had a great show on Virgin, in the late nineties, too. He played Spock's Beard, Steve Lukather, Sammy Hagar, IQ and all sorts. They suddenly pulled the plug and he was gone. He ended his days in a care/nursing home in Twickenham.

I always listened to, and liked, Tommy Vance, but music was changing by the time of his show (I remember him playing Bon Jovi and I did not get it at all), so Fluff was the real deal.

John Peel started playing rock bands like Kevin Ayers, Alex Harvey, Status Quo, The Pirates, Roky Eriksson, etc, but switched to Souxsie and the Banshees (which I also didn't get). Like Phil Collins, he began to criticise the progressive rock bands of the seventies like ELP.
