Re: Private Message Suggestion

You have a point JG about not looking at who is online. (Whoa...I missed some posts!) I realized that when I went to "who's online" just now.

Frankly, it shouldn't be all that interesting to anyone *shrugs*, but Jen has been clear about her issues, or rather the issues someone else had with her. If it is a problem for one person, it is worth addressing. And while it is not a problem for me, I would prefer it not be displayed. Hence, this thread!

It is up to Magic and LG in the end -- it was a suggestion/question, that's all.

LL, don't worry. LG and Magic are always wanting to do what's best for the forum and I know they'll be look into your suggestion and be fair about it. Personally I think it's a great idea. I've also been a member on another forum long ago and there was no Who's Online either.

Re: Private Message Suggestion

Dunno why there is an issue of what Jen said, its her opinion, it doesn't bother me the pm thing but it does other people.

^^^ Thanks :cheers2

And if the entire option can't be tweaked, I like LL's suggestion about setting our own preferences so others can't see who we're PMing.

Re: Private Message Suggestion

What problems could it possibly cause?

Welllllll...let's lay it out so EVERYBODY can understand what ILJP was trying to say. When it seems that you are the only person who seems to have an issue with this whole thing.

1) "Private" messaging. You see the first word? PRIVATE. That means..."privacy" to some people. When other members of the forum are able to see who other members of the forum are messaging, that's not exactly private. I could care less who or why people have an issue with other people messaging other people, the fact of the matter is, when you label something that's private, it's supposed to be private.

2) The unnecessary issue of "why are you talking to that person, and not to me" thing. Seriously? If someone has a problem with somebody else talking to somebody privately, grow some ****ing balls, obviously they are trusting the person they are talking to about a personal matter. I've seen it quite a few times, and i've been involved in it. And quite frankly, it's a little immature when people have issues with other people talking to other people on the forum. Nobody "owns" somebody else, so the fact of the matter is. People are going to privately message other people.

I am in the middle of taking a break from the forum, but I wanted to step in and give my two cents.

OK... this has gone far enough. I am closing this thread until Magic or LG can review it.

Re: Private Message Suggestion

Re-opening the thread for the following reason(s):

  • if you support this idea/suggestion, feel free to add something whether it be a lengthy response or "yeah this is a good idea".
  • if you disagree and think that the suggestion made by LL in the first post is a bad idea, by all means, please let us know why.
  • if you couldn't care less, then why say "who cares". If you don't have an opinion, there's no reason to state it here.

In the end, everyone please play nice regarding the topic at hand. I will post a couple of thoughts on this in a bit as well as address some of the posts already made in regard to the suggestion.

Re: Private Message Suggestion

Thanks, Nolo, but I don't want to be invisible. And if you are replying and want to keep a convo going, this is not going to work. And then there are people like our TUNEZ :D who use special characters in his screen names and you'd have to c/p his name to send him a message in the way you suggested. (Sorry, Tunez, I'm not trying to throw you under the proverbial bus, if there is one, which there isn't ( :uh: :uh: ) -- I was going to use special characters in my screen name, too, just as I have on other forums! :cheers2 )
That's why it's a downside of doing this. :grinthumb

Re: Private Message Suggestion

To give a quick general comment to LL's original suggestion and her reasoning behind bringing it up.

When looking at a profile, or at "who's online", we can see that a member is using the private messaging system, and we can also see who he/she is writing to or reading from.

It feels like I'm infringing on a member's private to know who he/she is private messaging, LOL.

Is there a particular reason this shows the to/from and that we want it to continue to be displayed?
I could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure that this is the default and possibly the only option when viewing Who's Online with this software. I will have to check this out on my private site to verify this, but I think that the only real option for Who's Online is that for the general public (anyone not a mod/admin) is that we can turn it on (meaning we see everything we see now) or it's turned off (meaning that who's online simply is not available to use).

If not, can we hide that info and just show "private messaging"? Or...have the option, in our user profile, to show/not show our PM to/from?
Cool idea, but with the vbulletin software, currently this is not an option.

I will check on my site in a bit to see if I can find some more information (since I don't have full admin privs here, I'd need that to check it out)
