Yeah, I'd say 6 minutes is when it starts getting long. After 18 minutes, I would call it "excessive."

Similarly, a "long" novel would be around 600 pages.

Mmm, 6 mintues. But there are some 5 minute songs which seem to drag on for years and some 8 minute songs which seem to be over all too soon
i agree. it all depends on the song most of the times...but depending on the length of a song, i'd say about 9 minutes is what i'd consider long.

Anything over 6 minutes i regard as being long, songs that spring to mind from my collection are Creams Spoonful and Toad, both on Wheels Of Fire and both over 16 minutes long.Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun from the Live At The Isle Of Wight cd is 22 minutes long.A 15 minutes long My Generation on Live At Leeds by The Who_On the How The West Was Won by Led Zeppelin there's several songs over the 20 minutes mark. There's a 30 minute version of No Quarter on the LA Forum 21 6 77 boot, but the longest song i have in my collection is a version of Dazed And Confused from Led Zeppelin at Earls Court 25 5 75 weighing in at a hefty 32 minutes 57 seconds.

I'd say anything over 5-6 minutes is long. I'm referring to whatever's popular, be it rock, R&B, whatever. Prog/rock "Epics" are something else altogether. I remember when "Light My Fire" was a big hit in 1967 (or whenever it was). I think the song originally was about 6-7 minutes long (I'm not really a Doors fan so I don't remember the exact length of the song). It was edited for radio to over 5 minutes, which would have been considered "epic length" on AM radio back then. It seemed really long. That organ solo went on for ever.

9+ minutes for me is long.

But long isn't necessarily bad for me, as long as it has substance, it's all good. The 27 minute version of Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers, for example, is an awesome song that justifies it's extended playing time, IMO.

If you want to talk about long pieces of music, some of the longest songs in history are classical works.

Hector Berlioz's opera "Les Troyens"(The Trojans) is the longest, one single piece of "real" classical music. It would take two concert appearances to listen to the whole thing.

The solo piano piece "The History of Photography in Sound" by Michael Finnissy takes more than 5 hours to perform. Frederic Rzewski's "The Road" takes about 10 hours.

Rock n' Roll or Progressive Rock can't hold a candle to the length of some epic classical pieces.
