Somehow although Berry was truly more essential towards the advent of the marvelous country/blues/gospel concoction known as American Rock n Roll,Tupelo,Mississippi's favorite son managed to harness more glory as result of various collateral circumstance, mostly then existing and quite obvious racism within the radio and recording industries. Then there remains the obvious element of Presley's rather overt sex appeal to hordes of deliriously screeching female fans.......

Watched the movie King Creole (1958) for the first time today.
Holy shit. Elvis actually could act!!! Good film
A shame he wasn't more particular with the films he chose to make after he got out of the army

Chuck Berry is the true king of rock music...

But Elvis can be the next runner up lol.

Not saying you are wrong, but timelines and sales would say otherwise.

July 1955 - Chuck Berry's 1st single, Maybelline - Reached #5 on the US singles chart.
May 1956 - Chuck Berry's 2nd single (specifically the 2nd to chart), Roll Over Beethoven - Reached #29 on the US singles chart
Mar 1957 - Chuck Berry's 3rd single (3rd to chart) School Day (Ring Ring Goes the Bell) - Reached #3 on the US singles chart, first to chart in the UK at #24.

July 1954 - Elvis 1st single, That's All Right
Sometime in 1954 - Elvis' first single to chart - I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine - reached #74 on the US singles chart
(had a few hits in 1955 on the country charts)
Jan 1956 - Elvis' first #1 single - Heartbreak Hotel - hits #1 on the singles and country charts, the b-side of this single hit #19 on the charts.
Mar 1956 - Blue Seude Shoes - Elvis 3rd single in 2 months hits #20 on the singles charts
May 1956 - I Want You, I Need You, I Love You - hits #1 on the singles and country charts

Elvis had SIX #1 hits in 1956 and one that hit #2. He also had his first charted single a year before Chuck.

There's no denying Chuck's innovation on the guitar, stage presence, etc in the history of Rock and Roll. However, I find it very hard to give Chuck that title, regardless of anything that came afterward. Elvis was here and on the scene before Chuck and made a far bigger impact (at least from a pop culture standpoint) than Chuck ever could have.

however, one thing Chuck gave us that Elvis never did.... he gave us that face.

The face when Yoko "sang" behind him on stage. The same face that everyone else on earth made, except for Lennon.

Oh, God! I remember that. It was at that moment Chuck knew... Yono could not sing. Wonder what primal animal intuition came over her. I love how bug-eyed Chuck got. Hahahaha.

But you are right about Elvis.
