Mastodon is a metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, that formed in 1999. The band comprises of bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. They are influenced by sludge metal bands The Melvins and Neurosis and '70s hard-rockers Thin Lizzy. One of my favorite metal bands that has come out some what recently and one of my favorite bands period.

Re: Mastodon

I have 3 of these albums, Crack The Skye being my favourite. One of the best metal albums of the last 5 years for me.

Hey dude, I'm obviously not been the metal connoisseur that you are but I've heard a ton about this band over the years and your thread gave me a chance to satisfy my curiosity! :grinthumb One thing that intrigued me was hearing about their subject matter. This one:

was supposed to have lyrics about Moby Dick I believe! Pretty unique concept! :grinthumb

Anyway after hearing every track hear I liked the first and last two track the best. The vocals seem different on the first and next to last than in any of the other songs. Have they changed styles at all from album to album?

Anyway, great review as always and thanks for satisfying my curiosity on this band!

Re: Mastodon

I saw them live and they are amazing live IMO. They did a Melvins cover and a Thin Lizzy cover. Very loud. Some of the best musicians around today. Brann Dailor is fill crazy behind the set but makes it sound amazing. Truly a great band.

I have Leviathan and Crack the Sky ( I like the instrumental version). I find this band to be one of the better of the new millenium metal bands.

I have everything by this band, I think Mud is the one who introduced me to them months ago.

I love the cover of Leviathan, almost as good as Ahab's.

Indeed. I'm seeing them a second time in May with Between the Buried and Me, Baroness, and Valient Thorr. All four albums are great pieces of music. There's little to dislike with Mastodon.

Re: Mastodon

I've got the albums and I've seen them live twice - 2nd time was the best, they played as a trio :D First time around they played a Lizzy-cover too.

Gonna see them a 3rd time this summer...

Lotta 'tr00' metal fans call them too mainstream. But that's bollocks, innit.

Mainstream or not, Mastodon is damn good - hence being more familiarized in metal music. There is no in between.

Yeah, I agree - I don't see them as mainstream AT all. I think that's just silly black metal people talking :D
