Selling out is the most annoying term in music. Fans use such a cop out term to justify bashing a band for doing their own thing. Bands do not owe fans a ****ing thing regarding their sound. Selling out would if anything be pandering to the fans even if the music is not what they wanted to do.

Actually I agree with you. "Selling out" is just a fan's way of saying "They're not making the kind of music I like! :wa " :gig

Exactly. I used to be guilty of this term back in the day but I learned better over time when I started researching music and watching people talk about evolution.

I also think selling out can be giving up integrity for trends.

That's true. When it comes down to it, you have to maintain your career. Your band is your business and to make a living you need to do what's best for your livelihood. Regardless of what tough decisions need to be made.

Good point. Though I guess some people will easily label a band as selling out if they change their sound slightly. Die hard thrash fans hated the acoustic intro to the Ride The Lightning album - not to mention Fade To Black.

Neil Young's Harvest is one of my favorite all time albums, BTW.

I knew Metallica would quickly make it to this discussion. I'm sure there are different fans who cry sell out after every album released by the band. (to each their own)

Funny thing is Metallica got called sellouts for having dared to have a ballad on their albums. Fade to Black got them their first accusations of selling out. Reality is Metallica do sell out but its in arena form.

Ride The Lightning is pretty heavy overall as an album in my opinion. Just because there was one slower melodious song in there, these fans couldn't take it?? I don't understand these types of metal fans... what do they want? an album 100% filled with high speed riffing, double bass pedal and screaming? Geez... lol.

Those same fans would then bitch about Metallica being stagnant and trying to copy their old work had they kept being thrash.

the term is pretty stupid (IMHO) and has been thrown around for many years. On one hand, there are people that don't like a 'new' sound and they call the artist or band a bunch of sellouts

On the other hand, I've seen plenty of people say a band is a bunch of sellouts for allowing their music to be used commercially. Yeah, that's pretty ****ing dumb if you ask me. A band gets their music played to a wider audience is good for everyone, unless you're some upity snobbish hipster-type. In which, case, I couldn't care less what you say at that point.

If I'm watching TV and I see a Cadillac commercial with a Beatles or Zeppelin track playing in the background, I think "cool". If I go to a sporting event and the beginning of Crazy Train is being played right before the start of a play, I'm happy with that. I sure as hell don't consider that "selling out" although some snobs seem to think so.

:gig ...like how certain detractors of Iron Maiden complain.

Judas Priest fans have done the same. lol

In reality its not selling out on any part if a band is doing what they feel like doing creatively whether I think it sounds good or bad. Sure I hate St Anger but I respect the band doing what they felt like doing at that time frame. Megadeth could actually be said to have sold out with Risk seeing as Dave was pressured by the producer to really go in that poppy direction. But the thing that really stops him having sold out is the fact he called the album what it actually was, Risk. Did an album I think he probably wanted to be poppy anyway but maybe not to the extent it was.

To drop a bombshell on Slayer fans if anything they could be accused of selling out by not doing enough sound wise for themselves. lol

I totally agree with you, although I think the irritation comes when it is a particularly annoying ad. And then you forever associate that song/artist with an irritating ad. But... I have to say that the one time I heard Led Zep's Rock n Roll on some car ad, I loved hearing it!

Yup, same here.

Agree dude. Metallica are still awesome. Fade to Black is a cool song.
