Linda Ronstadt Forced to End Career Due to Parkinson’s Disease

The career of Linda Ronstadt has come to an unfortunate end due to Parkinson’s disease. The singer was diagnosed with the neurological condition this past winter.

Ronstadt publicly disclosed the news in an interview with AARP, which will be published on their website next week, but excerpted yesterday (Aug. 23). She knew something was wrong when she had trouble using her famous voice.

“I couldn’t sing and I couldn’t figure out why,” she told them. “I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had. And it didn’t occur to me to go to a neurologist. I think I’ve had it for seven or eight years already, because of the symptoms that I’ve had. Then I had a shoulder operation, so I thought that’s why my hands were trembling.”

The degenerative condition has weakened Ronstadt to the point where she needs poles when walking on uneven ground, and requires a wheelchair when she travels. There is no cure for Parkinson’s, but symptoms can be managed through medication.

In a recording career lasting 35 years, Ronstadt had 20 Top 40 hits and earned 14 platinum albums and 11 Grammys. In addition to rock, she recorded standards, country and traditional Mexican music, and also starred on Broadway in Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera ‘The Pirates of Penzance.’ Her last album was 2006′s ‘Adieu False Heart,’ a collaboration with Cajun singer Ann Savoy.

Sad news indeed. She had one of the greatest voices in pop history. She took some classic songs and made them her own. I wish you a peaceful journey, Linda.

This is sad...I would rather drop dead of a heart attack than succumb to a disease like Parkinson's.

I'll listen to some of her music tomorrow and think of her.

All the best Linda, thanks for the gift you gave us.

For me,along with Stevie Nicks and Pat Benatar,Rondstadt possessed not only the sheer physical ability of a true songstress, she delivered as someone who truly FELT was she was SINGING.Today I'm afraid there's a terrific dearth of this in the mainstream. It all sounds so...er...pedestrian........

Linda Ronstadt Won’t Attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony

Linda-Ronstadt.jpg

On April 10, Linda Ronstadt will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a special star-studded tribute from Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow and Carrie Underwood. But one star who won’t be in attendance is Ronstadt herself.

As Ronstadt recently told Billboard, her struggle with Parkinson’s disease has made it difficult to leave home. “It’s very hard for me to travel,” she explained. “I can’t travel very easily. I have to save traveling for things I really have to do. I have to spend a certain amount of time visiting my family, and I have to spend a little bit of time doing things that are professional. But I just can’t travel casually. it’s too hard.”

But even without health concerns keeping her away, it sounds as though Ronstadt might not have gone to the ceremony. “I haven’t given it one thought, I have to say,” she insisted. “It wasn’t anything I ever thought about. I never thought of myself as a rock’ n’ roll singer; I sang it, (but) it’s just one of the things I sang. I sang a lot of different stuff. I didn’t go the last two times I was nominated for a Grammy, either. I don’t have anything against it; you just don’t do things for those reasons. If you’re working for prizes, you’re in trouble. There’s nothing wrong with it. I don’t mind it. It’s just not anything I ever gave a thought to.”

Although her disease has robbed her of the ability to sing, Ronstadt remains active in archival releases of her work; she assisted with the sequencing for the ‘Duets’ compilation Rhino is releasing on April 8, and she concedes that more projects in that vein could be on the horizon.

“I could put out a whole record of just Jimmy Webb stuff, or I’ve got enough duets with Aaron (Neville) to make a whole album,” she mused. “But I don’t know how much of a demand there is for it; the record business has changed so profoundly. It’s not something I think about, but every once in awhile a record company comes and says, ‘We’d like to put out this. Do you think you could put this together?’ and I go, ‘OK, I can do that.’ I’d love to do stuff of me singing with other women singers, like Ann Savoy and Dolly [Parton] and Emmylou and Laurie [Lewis] and just have it be that, or just traditional stuff. I sang a lot of stuff, so there are all sorts of possibilities, I guess.”

I get it! Wow! I get it! I saw the last post in here are tragic ones with her getting Parkinsons! I'm not going to let that deflate my experience with the music the music though! I grabbed three of her albums from that goldmine at Wal-Mart and just decided to take a break from my newer albums and just listen to the three albums I bought:

Prisoner In Disguise, Hasten Down The Wind & Living In The USA

Here are my favorites and what I wrote as soon as I heard them:

Prisoner In Love
(Wow! These harmonies give me chills! Beautiful! :))

I Will Always Love You
(Another stunning cover! I think that this definitely influenced how Whitney took on the song! It may not be as showboaty but I love the sadness in her vocal here! Brilliant take! :))

Try Me Again
(This tune is a stirring masterpiece of Country, R&B and Rock!)

Down So Low
(Damn! Amazing Gospel Soul! Her voice works with anything! I guarantee even Aretha would quiver after hearing this Soul vocal!)

When I Grow To Old To Dream
(The Living in The USA album looks like it's going to be far cheesier when you look at the cover but it's not disappointing musically! This song attest to that!)
