Three of my all time favorite tunes and in my mind timeless classics."I Love How You Love Me" by the Paris Sisters,"I Only Have Eyes For You" by the Flamingos and "Maybe" by the Chantels.I've also recently been breaking out my "Encore of Golden Hits" by the Platters on the black Mercury label. My father grew up listening to and greatly admiring these and I feel they are all prime examples of popular music much more than deserving of being passed on to and treasured by all generations for all time.Listening to these for any serious music fan is essential.Preservation is duly necessary.......

I grew up listening to my Mom's favorite artists Nat King Cole, Percy Faith, Frank, Dean, Elvis, Dinah Washington and Peggy Lee. I can't say I'm an expert on them but some songs will be forever imprinted on my consciousness.

As far as preserving old music, the Library of Congress is already doing that, I believe they have a mandate to preserve all the music made in the 20th century.(If someone knows more than I do they can correct me.)

Andy Williams and Perry Como were a couple of my mother's faves LG and I can appreciate why, they were laid back masters of their craft.

Como was one of Ol' Blue Eyes' personal faves.I believe Tony Bennett was his number one.Me,I kind of like listening to these sorts of singers, not only for their apparently inherent entertainment gifts, but also since alot of them recorded alot of the same standard tunes,I rather enjoy comparing and contrasting the different versions by artists of varying styles.Few if any would disagree that Sinatra was indeed the apex of all of this, but I think one could stack a fairly reasonable case for Dean Martin here.Percy Faith's "Theme from 'A Summer Place'" is unquestionably one of the greatest movie hits ever,in terms of not only the record's quality, but also the fact that the record spent nine weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 a feat equaled in the decade only by the Beatles' mammoth smash "Hey Jude".........

Listening to remakes of classics often pushed me to give the originals a go. I do have CD mix of 50's and early 60's tunes that I took from my parent's CD collection. Off the cuff, here are some notables that I like:

"Harbor Lights" - The Platters
"Twilight Time" - The Platters
"Whose Sorry Now?" - Connie Francis
"Crazy" - Patsy Cline
'Spanish Eyes" - Al Martino
"Stardust" - Nat King Cole

"Rip It Up" is one of the very most definitive rock and roll records ever, along with "Johnny B. Goode","Hound Dog" and so many others from the '55-'58 period that emitted massive ripple effects on pop music history......

Great list of songs Bob D., most of them have been covered many times over the years too.

Here's one of my favorite Dean Martin songs.

I was surprised to learn back when he was starting out Dean was a boxer and a very good one, not someone you wanted to tangle with either. His movie career was almost nipped in the bud, many studio execs didn't feel the need to cast 'another Italian crooner', in their words. He was a good actor, and I really liked him cast with John Wayne in both Sons of Katie Elder and Rio Bravo.

I have a compilation of his greatest hits, and always think of my Mom when I listen to him sing.
