I feel the same way about Maiden as you do about Def Leppard (actually in Def Leppard's case as soon as Pete Willis was out they completely fell off a cliff whereas Maiden made two decent albums with Dickenson).^^ He has proven to be the perfect fit for Maiden in my eyes. Di'Anno was good but Dickenson is a big part of why they became the big band they are now.
Pity because those albums are far better than the commercialised garbage they did in the 90s.
I am glad there are bands who can admit some of their work isn't great. I find it ridiculous when most bands will praise every single thing they have written especially since their word can persuade people into buying it. Of course they aren't going to discourage people buying their music but at least be honest when giving an assessment to the sound of the album.
I am not at all talking about commercial viability (which cannot really be measured since it is largely a hypothetical question) but rather how much enjoyment I get from the music.
