"Ew,why do you hear this old awful music?Listen to techno"
I can't believe that they compare ROCK with TECHNO!!!

I'm not sure that I even know what techno sounds like and I actually don't know of a single band that plays techno. Name one "good" one.

Bands like Creed, Staind and Nickelback may suck compared to what WE grew up on....

That's precisely what I don't understand though. These bands don't play the blues rock that I enjoyed so much from bands like the Rolling Stones, Cream, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. In fact, after about 1980 blues influenced rock seemed to disappear - and rock music just didn't sound as good. Straight metal is somehow lacking. But the template was set for later bands by the artists I mentioned. Why has no band picked up the blues-rock mantle since Zeppelin?

:wtf:

Fox, babe, give the Derek Trucks band a try (from the Allman Brothers Band)

Another good blues rock electric guitarist is Joe Bonamassa

and Gov't Mule, Black Crowes, and the Black Keys.

all the afore mentioned musicians are blues-rock. Trust me, it is NOT dead :D

And techno, lets see,,,it is very different from what you are use to hearing...you wont hear any Led Zep but there are decent techno music...I myself personally like Aphex Twin or Orbital. Both of these are pretty ambient and trance-like music. Another good techno would be Orb, also ambient and trippy music. DJ Tiesto has some good stuff, too, Altough it is not as ambient (I like the ambient techno).

Crystal Method's "Vegas"? The only other CD I own that might be considered Techno would Stereo MCs' "Connected" But those two cds don't sound anything like the Techno you expect to hear at Raves or what DJs would spin at a club.

Maybe that's just the evolution of rock music. The Beatles' and Stones' music in the 60's was pretty tame compared to what would follow just a few short years in Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. And everything was hunky dory for most of the 70's, but in the late 70's new bands like The Scorpions, UFO, Judas Priest, Triumph, Def Leppard and Van Halen had their own ratcheted-up sound which set the stage for the early-80's bands like Motley Crue, Ratt and Dokken which then started the 80's metal/glam craze. Then there were other bands in the early 80's like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Motorhead who all had a heavier and faster sound which then opened the door for groups like Slayer, Pantera, Anthrax and Exodus. Then the 90's had a more industrial metal sound with Faith No More, Tool and Rage Against The Machine. Then it morphed into Rap-Metal like Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park and Puddle of Mudd. Ok, now I'm confused. Where was I going with all this??? Well, anyways, I'm just happy to hear singers actually sing, and not yell at me. :heheh:

I like the Black Keys and I already have two of their CDs.

I was thinking of picking up either something by the Black Crowes or by Whitesnake in the spring and ended up going for Whitesnake. I've been a bit disappointed with Whitesnake but I'll go on to the Black Crowes.

I'll check out the Derek Trucks Band and Gov't Mule as well.

But if nobody is listening, would that not tell you that rock is dead? And if only few are listening, would that not mean that rock is on life support?

And what if many are listening but nobody is buying? That wouldn't be good for rock either.

While I understand that album sales are down, I'm not sure that listeners of rock are dwindling. Concert sales aren't down and large scale festivals are up in USA after several decades of just about no big festivals. Even old standard style rock bands are being noticed. Silversun Pickups being nominated for a new artist grammy is a good sign.

here you go if rock is not selling then why is u2 still breaking attendance records?

U2 Break U.S. Concert Attendance Record

U2’s recent show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California was not only the band’s first show to be streamed live on YouTube, it was the bands biggest U.S. concert ever.

The concert, which took place on October 25, broke the U.S. attendance record for best-attended single concert performance by one headliner.

Over 97,014 fans packed the sold out California venue, reports

You may hate Marilyn Manson's guts, but as long as there is INNOVATION like that, ROCK WILL NEVER BUDGE from its throne.....remember history repeats itself.....they used to detest Elvis's Pelvis and Little Richard's hairdo back in the day, but rock is STILL here and it WILL stay here....forever....like it or not!!!:):)
Someone here in this thread said that "no music form will ever die...", but it's forms like disco music that will fal into oblivion one day.....UNlike rock :)

We are witnessing the biggest upheaval in modern music history bar none, what the landscape will look like in a few years I will be curious to see myself. I am sure rock bands/music will still be with us in one form or another.

Rock is alive as long as you have a turntable, tape deck, and/or other media playing devices along with source material to play.

Penny Lane in the film "Almost Famous" said, "I always tell the girls, never take it seriously, if ya never take it seriosuly, ya never get hurt, ya never get hurt, ya always have fun, and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends. "
