Burn and Machine Head for me. Regarding the media basically writing off Fireball, they did the same to Houses Of The Holy of Led Zeppelin and that was a good album too.

As far as the media goes, it seems that all the worse musicians I know
are always the most critical of everyone's else's work. Probably cause
they envy their ability..the rock media is full of the jealous, frustrated type. I never listen to ANYTHING they have to say... Other then the ones that are just fans and then I listen to very little opting to think for myself..

DKW; I had picked up Battle Rages On some time back and I really like it. I agree that it's an overlooked piece of work. I enjoy it.

You American's alway preferred pop over progressive!!.

DEEP PURPLE originally broke BIG in the USA as a 'pop band' around 1968/69 when they couldn't get arrested here in the UK!!.

Then in late 1969 the band returned home to the UK. Between 1970-74 they were MASSIVE in the UK with the albums IN ROCK, FIREBALL, MACHINE HEAD, MADE IN JAPAN & WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE it was only around the time of the California jam (April 1974) that the band became popular back in the USA again.

Yeah WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE is an underrated album, theres some good tracks on that album like Woman from Tokyo, Mary Long, Super Trouper, Black suede, Rat bat blue, Place in line & Our lady, in fact the whole album is pretty good. :grinthumb

THE BATTLE RAGES ON is a 'pop album' you guy's come on!!. :D

Pop or not it's still pretty good. I like it...doesn't mean I don't like anything heavier or more progressive by them.:grinthumb

@ EZ I am Australian and I love this stuff lol
I agree, and being heavy does not always make a good song, its good to enjoy variety in the Deep Purple range.
I love the 80s albums onward too.

Agreed...they're a great band all the way through, and supplied us with more than enough variety depending on one's mood.
