Some good reading in here this morning...

EZ...I can't speak for my neighbours to the south, but Machine Head and Made In Japan were huge in Canada.

Machine Head is a gateway album for me, it's in my personal pantheon of the top 20 Rock albums ever recorded. My brother and his friend's all bought a copy when it came out and my Mom even borrowed his album she Loved it...:grinthumb

I am like Riff and MP when it comes to DP, they are flexible and can produce something totally different like "Concerto for Group & Orchestra", to Stormbringer and pull it off with style.

I'd have to check...but I believe I have all of their studio albums in the library.

Hey guy's i was joking about American's prefer pop over progressive a sweeping statement which doesn't stand up.

Granted times and bands change and nothing stays the same but to me i always like to think of DEEP PURPLE in there UK prime which basically was from the album DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK 1970 through to BURN 1974 more particularly the MkII era of-BLACKMORE, GILLAN, LORD, GLOVER & PAICE.

During the 1970-71 era DEEP PURPLE was even regarded as a 'progressive rock' band in the UK and in there live sets long 25-30 minutes numbers were the norm such as CHILD IN TIME, MANDRAKE ROOT, WRING THAT NECK as well as shorter numbers such as SPEED KING, INTO THE FIRE & LUCILE (a Little Richard song performed as a encore).

When i think of DEEP PURPLE thats how i like to remember them NOT putting out albums such as PERFECT STRANGERS & THE BATTLE RAGES ON as good as some of you guy's like those albums. :D

The biggest selling album here in the states was Machine Head. It is definitely not as heavy as In Rock OR Fireball. Made in Japan was also huge here as was In Rock.
If you listen to the boring often repeated babbling of the rock press they will tell you that they are basically Purples only albums. Some of us think for ourselves listen to the music and decide what we like and are unmoved by record sales or what the press tells us to like. Deep Purple were and are never pop, though a couple songs on House lean that way, an obvious attempt at radio play.

Deep Purple albums haven't sold impressively here since Perfect Strangers so the fact that some of a us are saying we like later era Purple has nothing to do with the American buying public. We are actually thinking for ourselves. Oh no dangerous concept..:omg::

Rainbow, after RDJ, on the other hand are a radio pop band other then a few song. Heavy they are not .....

DKW; I had picked up Battle Rages On some time back and I really like it. I agree that it's an overlooked piece of work. I enjoy it.

MUCH heavier then anything rainbow did after Ronnie left and WAY better.
Another one showing off his good taste :grinthumb

DEEP PURPLE stopped being DEEP PURPLE when Ritchie quit back in 1993 then Jon Lord walked 10 years ago thats when it should have finished, it ain't really DEEP PURPLE anymore kiddies it stopped being DEEP PURPLE back in 1976.

That comes down to opinion, I define those albums just as much Deep Purple as the 70s stuff.
I might actually try to track down a copy of The Battle Rages On, I need that in my collection.

To expand on my agreeing before, no doubt people back then and still do like to judge albums on what the press said, its ridiculous as people should learn to get a mind of their own. If everyone did this all the under rated gems would be buried. :D
