Don't these components (circuits) just add colour (distort) to the sound? Or maybe it's the placebo effect? I can see them being some worth when added to an entry level CD or DVD player or an ipod.

To my ears they don't. It smoothed out the harsh edge of the CD with no distortion whatsoever. The chain for me is transport->Monarchy DIP 24/96->DAC->Tube buffer.
