KURT COBAIN's Hometown Rejects Naming Bridge After Him - July 29, 2011
According to The Pulse Of Radio, the people and officials of Aberdeen, Washington have officially rejected a proposal to rename the town's Young Street Bridge as the Kurt Cobain Bridge. The City Council voted 10 to one on Wednesday (July 27) against the idea after it drew a strong negative reaction from residents. Several citizens who came to the council meeting to voice their disapproval, along with a number of council members, were not pleased with the prospect of naming the bridge after a musician who used drugs. The final vote was reportedly met with applause from the audience.

All was not lost, however: a small park near the bridge will still be named the Cobain Landing.

The bridge that would have been named in the late NIRVANA frontman's honor is allegedly the one under which Cobain lived for a while in his younger days, an experience he wrote about in the song "Something In The Way".

Not surprised all things considered. He is a polarizing figure even now.

I did not know he lived under the bridge for a while, that is an interesting bit of trivia.

I think 20+ years down the road, they might rename the bridge in his honor, it's a generational thing and when the older folks are not running things anymore people that grew up with Nirvana and Kurt will be able to pay him all kinds of tributes if they want.

I wonder if the Cobain family has established a "foundation" or give donations to his hometown. If they did, I am sure the people would soften on the idea of having something named after a guy who did drugs

Atleast they have a small park in his Honor, afterall, Kurts name will always be remembered by music fans! If the park had a monument of Kurt, I bet it would be a HUGE tourist attraction :)

Naming a bridge after someone who offed himself?

Is that kind of thing not usually reserved for someone who died with honour or did something really important in a lifetime?

^^I have no problem with Kurt getting recognition from his fans for his Music contributions, they alone are enough to warrant a bridge or park being named after him in his hometown.

To dwell on his death without acknowledging his legacy is not fair. It will happen it's just a matter of time.

Thats the thing...from his fans...how many in his hometown are actual fans?

Kobain is huge in that area from what Prime has told us.

And right on LG. What you said about later generations honoring him is spot on, and the reason why he's snubbed so much by the older generations. He'll be more appreciated years from now like you said when the younger generations are running things.

And I get so tired of people bringing up the manner in which he died. He made a stupid decision in a vulnerable moment and was rumored to suffer from bipolar disorder which is very difficult to cope with and often leads to situations like his.

Considering how massively important Nirvana was to an entire generation of fans, I would think there will be enough support in the future to do something nice to remember him.

After all Jimi Hendrix died of an overdose, John Bonham drank himself to death, Keith Moon the same, there is not much difference between them and Kurt's tragedy, yet they are revered all these years later by my generation.

The music and influence of Nirvana will outlast the dark cloud of his suicide, at least I think so.

I didnt bring it up to say he shouldnt be honoured because he commited suicide, I just didnt think people who commit suicide have things named after them.
