Re: Styx

Sorry to bump this thread...but since I'm new and a huge Styx fan, I had to post something here.

I first bought their stuff on vinyl back in the 70s. When they wore out, I repurchased my collection on cassette and then on CD. Currently my Styx collection consists of 11 CDs.

My favorites CDs:

- Equinox
- Crystal Ball
- Grand Illusion
- Pieces OF Eight

Favorite song:

Madam Blue from their Equinox release

...great thread btw :grinthumb

Re: Styx

^^Feel free to bump any thread you like Dreams, we have no problem with that at all.

Those would be my four picks as well except in this order.

Pieces of Eight
Grand Illusion
Crystal Ball
Equinox.

But I like almost all their albums, MP and some others convinced me to pick up everything up to and including Kilroy Was Here...so I am well stocked with Styx.:D

Re: Styx

Styx for some odd reason is one of the bands I didn't stick with in my later life. I have no idea why. I think I spun a hole in Crystal Ball. I love their music! The vocals, keyboards, guitars all awesome and for lack of a better description... The Theatre of their music. I just never replaced any of their albums with CDs'. :bonk:

I've never seen the original members live. I did catch them at Summerfest a few years ago and I did catch Dennis De Young as Pontius Pilate when he toured with Jesus Christ Superstar.

Some of my favorite songs... (too much to list)

I thought this was done well with scenes from Dark Crystal...

Re: Styx

^^^ MFSL? SHM?

I think I'm going to look for a box set... each album was too good to buy a greatest hits. If no box I'm going to grab the 4 or 5 albums I loved.

Re: Styx

MFSL = Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, they made audiophile pressings in the vinyl era and then invented their own digital mastering technology and released CD's of old classics as well.

SHM = JVC's patented CD formula, it's technical but they way they make a CD allows the laser to pick up more information from the disc thereby improving the depth and clarity of the recording without knocking the balance out of whack.

Even regular Japanese CD's are usually much better than ours, they are sticklers for quality control.

Re: Styx

Here`s a great band with brilliant albums.

I just got into Styx after they had toured the UK on their Paradise Theatre
tour, my dad still reckons it`s the best show he ever went to.

I loved the fact they had two main singers and a third in James Young now and then.

My favourite albums are Grand Illusion, Pieces Of Eight and Paradise Theatre.

Equinox and Crystal ball are really good too, Cornerstone was another good one but it all went wrong with Kilroy Was here, though it had some good stuff on it.

I had the pleasure of seeing their current line up a few years back in Birmingham and they were absolutely spot on, really good live and I`m hard to please :D

Re: Styx

Pieces of Eight and Grand Illusion are my two favorites, but I like their early recordings as well, before Tommy Shaw joined the band.

I've heard that "Gowan" has done a fabulous job on vocals since he replaced Dennis DeYoung, but haven't seen Styx live myself.
