It has to be the Beatles, for a very simple reason that has nothing to do with the quality of their music...This is simply that no band or artist in history deserves the praise that they receive. The pedestal that people have put them on is just so high that no one could possibly live up to it. Same goes for Shakespeare. In the literary community, you can essentially be excommunicated for saying anything even mildly negative about Shakespeare. All that is really neither here nor there, though.

The same can be said about any artist/band really.

^^Nicely stated DOC...and I definitely see a similarity between Shakespear and how some people see the Beatles. For me I love their music, the insanity that surrounded them never really affected me even when I was living through those times. I always found it highly amusing that girls would get so wound up over a band...:heheh:

I still have the Fab Four rated as Hugely important to rock music in general though, that will never change.:cheers2

Well people. Heres MY two cents worth..... finally.. it was hard to pick and Im sure some of them have already been pastured to death.. It might wonder off a bit, but the meaning is certainly there.. here goes.

Elvis Presley - anybody who can steal good black music.. water it down, make it lame enough with a hint of taboo to scare the sh*t out of kids parents and the religious cult to make him a bit dangerous. And hiring all these girls to follow him around making him a "sex symbol".

Grateful Dead - That each song had to include a 25 minute acid trip for the hippies.

Bob Dylan - It was only in the early 80s did he ever make sense. "what did he say?"

The Doors - Jim Morrison as the "Lizard King"? Did I miss something? More of that psychedelic bull crap.

Janis Joplin - Whenever she stopped hollering and screeching and sang straight is when she sang was fairly decently..but that was rare.

The Beach Boys - ANY surfing music... Brain Wilson is a "genius", really....... when did I miss that... The only thing I thought when the Wilson name was funny was a cartoon about Brian Wilsons dad called "Rock n Roll Dad" on Icebox.com

Boston - Its all you ever heard coming from the radio... muscle/hot rod cars.. and the certain class rooms at school. PLAYED TO DEATH!

Bruce Springsteen - The critics fall over themselves to be the first in line to say how much of a genius he is.. then getting a boost from Regan for playing a certain song tho the meaning of the lyrics... that nobody bothered really reading in the white house... should never promoted. After all it WAS a dark song.

Chicago - During the 80s Mtv heavy rotation with sugar filled ballads that was never the same band as they were in the 70s.

Village People - Disco and I dont care if they were gay or not...Should of stayed in San Fransisco.

ZZ Top - anything after Eliminator... Then every Piss poor bar band started playing their stuff.. It was trendy thing to do... I guess.

Huey Lewis and the news - Every piss poor bar band play this as well...

Bee Gees - Saturday night fever...need I say more... BUT.. Lonely days, Jive Talking & Started a Joke were thee exceptions..

Gary Glitter - one hit wonder that force mindless sporting areas to play it during any game.. no matter if it was checkers.

Van Halen - Great guitar player.. alot of flash but no substance and it never changed.

George Michael - (cant make up my mind except for that Wham thing)

Whitney Houston - Riding the shirt tales of famous relatives and wearing a "peek-a-boo" shirt on her first videos. Then what happened to her again.....

Duran Duran - a group that MTV loved to run over and over. (video wise)

Guns N' Roses - There off stage then later on stage antics was left to be desired..

R.E.M. - A college band that I still dont understand why they got so popular.

U2 - Great new wave/pop rock band, then Bono got in to politics... bad move.

Madonna - Between her Playboy spread.. then her book.. and a movie.. and then her marriage to Shawn Penn she was just bad no matter which format she exploit.

Nirvana - Any Grunge... Then making himself a martyr after his alleged suicide with endless books, TV shows etc... and marrying that skank Courtney Love (who everybody knows actually murdered him), he was completely troubled and people made him a "god" for no reason whatsoever.

Metallica - Or should I say Metallicpuke hit rock bottom for the shameless and lame ass attack on Napster and any file sharing PoP music site, which cause a major fire storm...even today to ploy a promotional gimmick for their new album and world tour. Talk about bottom feeders.

Marilyn Manson - Even Bowie had far more class when he changed into Ziggy Stardust then this guy ever did.. a nightmare that comes to life.

I guess a few of them are in the repetitious file... I lost count after "The Game" came or or after "Black In Black... among others... it was going to be at LEAST 20 years before I get anywhere close to that album.. can you say "Burned Out"? Sure I knew you could.

Halfway between the gutter and the stars
radiohead is far from complex. Their playing is pretty easy. Wtf are you talking about with overrated?

Their playing is pretty easy? Listen to a song like 15 step, the drums are playing triplets in 5/4 against the straight vocal melody. It's quite substantially harder than 90% of bands around. And what I'm talking about with overrated is that this is the overrated band thread that's where the whole discussion centred.

Stop making up percentages. Half the music I listen to puts them to shame when it comes to complexity of songs. Especially their drumming. This is why I say they are overrated.

No what I was asking was wtf were you asking? You worded that sentence in such a way the question did not make sense.

For me, it's - "Motley Crue" and "Guns'n'Roses" (with all due respect, Vince and Axl just can't sing and that's it. I can imagine how much cooler would sound the songs of these two groups, with vocals by Jeff Scott Soto, Mark Slaughter, Blackie Lawless or Steve Lee, for example...). Though, I can add "Nirvana" to this list. All of this - IMHO.2_sm5.gif
