Re: Hot Tuna

Most of Hot Tuna's discography are live albums. For some odd reason, they would record most of their concerts and voila! instant album. I shouldn't criticize for that, but it does seem odd. I think they only have 5 or 6 studio albums and the rest are all live.

Re: Hot Tuna

Some great tracks. Jorma vocals somewhat remind me of Alvin Lee. Every time I hear Hot Tuna I want to light up a fatty.

I don't know why, but for some reason I always picture Hot Tuna playing in a gunja cafe in Amsterdam.

If I am not mistaken, Jorma is Scandinavian and he probably did play in a gunja cafe at some point...wouldn't shock me if he didn't :D

Joey Covington, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane Drummer, Dead at 67

Joey Covington, who helped to create Hot Tuna and played drums in Jefferson Airplane for a few years, has died at the age of 67. He passed away on June 4 following a car crash in Palm Springs.

According to news reports, Covington’s sedan “slammed head on into a wall near a curve” around 5 p.m. He was declared dead at the scene, and police are investigating the cause of the crash. Witnesses said they heard no tires screeching prior to the accident.

Covington was one of the original members of Hot Tuna, along with Jefferson Airplane’s Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen. The band formed while Grace Slick was recovering from surgery and the Airplane were unable to tour. Covington was the Airplane’s drummer at the time.

He started playing drums at age 10 and replaced Spencer Dryden in Jefferson Airplane during the recording of 1969′s ‘Volunteers’ album. He also played on the ‘Bark’ and ‘Long John Silver’ albums. He left the group in 1972 to pursue a solo career.

While he was generally unheard from after he left the Airplane, his name did surface on Jefferson Starship‘***** 1976 single ‘With Your Love.’ He toured as a member of the San Francisco Allstars in the ’80s and ’90s.

Blues-rockers Hot Tuna have announced 11 new dates for their Holidays Tour, set to begin on Nov. 9 in Pomeroy, Ohio. The run will be mostly acoustic shows and include stops along the East Coast and through the Northeast before returning to Michigan, Ohio and Chicago.

Former Jefferson Airplane members Jack Casady (bass) and Jorma Kaukonen (guitar) have held down Hot Tuna since 1969. The band is rounded out by mandolin player Barry Mitterhoff and drummer Skoota Warner. They’ve released a number of live LPs and seven studio albums over the years, including the latest, ‘Steady As She Goes,’ in 2011.

Two of the 12 shows (which includes two performances on the same day in Chicago) will feature plugged-in electric sets: the kickoff date in Pomeroy and the group’s annual concert at the Beacon Theater. The first show in New York on Nov. 22 will be acoustic. Visit the group’s website for more info.
