The Sub-Genres of Progressive Rock.

The three I didn't vote for were RIO/Avant Prog, Zeuhl, and Neo-Prog.

My top four would be Symphonic Prog, Heavy Prog, Eclectic Prog, and Krautrock.

Magma is the only Zeuhl band I know anything about, and I don't play them very often.

I had no idea Prog was divided into so many sub-categories,,,it's got to be close to Metal for all the variations and labels...

I haven't even visited Magma. It's one place I don't want to go. From what I've read about it I'd rather travel to other places. So many places to visit.

I don't take offense about the Dianne Krall comment Joe! Sometimes putting a big contrast in front of someone is the best way to make someone get something. Like I instantly thought "Hey Miles is nothing like Kenny G either! Thank God!" So yeah, there are some fine lines between regular Jazz, Jazz Fusion and Elevator Jazz! I guess the best way to learn would be to see if I'm correct when hearing what I think is progressive myself. One of my favorite groups period South FM I swear has elements of Crossover Prog. This is not an easy group to portray as there are only a handle of tracks to listen to period but I'll try to give you some examples and maybe you can tell me whether they feel prog at all, somewhat prog oriented or not prog influenced at all?

A lot of members I associate with musically here have heard this one so I apologize for the repeated exposure but this is the best example youtube has of what I think is Prog affiliated:

(Right from the weird intro I feel for what was to be a single for them it's definitely a prog feel to me though a polished prog)

I get the feel more from listening to the albums and how the deeper cuts are a lot weirder in how they transition from song to song and how they play with verse and chorus structures within the song. They also have a lot of organic noise like a Mars Volta to end songs or be layered within. All things I think prog uses. Anyway, for this band this is the best I could give you in this thread. Curious how far off I am and whether or not there is something in the realm of prog similar to these guys because I love their sound!

I liked all three tracks. Good stuff. Didn't know of them.

From what I hear I'd place them more in the alternative/post grunge sub-genre. I do hear the elements you spoke of but very limited thus IMO wouldn't be placed in a prog. sub-genre. Experimental/Post metal would be the closest.

I am most surprised by the fact "Italian Prog" has a sub genre of it's own...I have read a little about them in Joe's Prog thread but otherwise didn't realize they had enough material out to even qualify for a sub-genre.

I think a good overall definition of the progressive rock genre would be music that incorporates elements from Jazz and Western Classical Music and showcases A complexity of harmonies, arrangements and musical structures all this within a roll and roll framework so to speak. It can and many times does incorporate many other music elements such as Eastern musical scales, Arabic scales etc etc etc....

Jazz Fusion would have a more Jazz dominate musical base then your typical progressive rock, In other words a lesser degree of the rock element is present
( although still fairly strong ) so that the Jazz element is more to the forefront.

Trad. Jazz of course does not contain a rock element and that would be the difference between Jazz Fusion and Jazz.

Like Joe stated earlier I am no expert and have no desire to present myself as one this is however my understanding and interpretation of the refinements of said musical genres.

I agree with Joe. I don't really hear a lot of progressive elements in the examples but I did enjoy them.


And LG, the Italians have A LOT of prog bands.

^^I know that now, the only Italian band I have that is even close is "Goblin" I have four of their soundtrack albums laying around somewhere haven't listened to them in ages though.

I've just checked the link you provided and I'm more confused than ever!

I thought I liked progressive rock but as I haven't heard of most of the bands listed, maybe I don't!

I feel the same way!

I am quite partial to the Canterbury scene, but other than Pink Floyd, whom I don't consider to be progressive rock(Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma aside), I really don't like much of the other bands in the lists. Maybe I don't like as much "prog" as I think I do!

I know I get a lot of flak for the Floyd comment, but that's how i've always felt about them.
