Sepultura is a platinum selling band, one of the top metal bands of the 90s. Dinosaur Jr. has had top 5 singles on the rock chart. These aren't obscure bands we're talking about, here. Not that being a mainstream band has shit all to do with whether their music happens to be good or bad.

I've met people who didn't know who Bob Dylan is. Shall we strike his name from the list as well? Fact is, what bands people hear about is based on what kind of music they listen to and who they talk to. If you listened to thrash, groove, nu-metal, alt-rock, indie, grunge, you'd hear about Sepultura and Dinosaur Jr. all the time. And people who don't listen to classic rock have probably never heard of T-Rex in their life, unless they're watching Jurassic Park. I couldn't tell you shit about big band or free jazz because I don't listen to those genres. And you probably don't listen to too much extreme metal or alternative music.

Heck, man, I don't like Sepultura any more than you do, and IMHO Dinosaur Jr. is at their most decent when they sound like Neil Young. But these are massive bands with years of influence under their belts, helping to forge major movements like grunge, groove metal, nu metal, and indie rock... selling records all over the world and influencing household names like Nirvana and Korn. We can say whatever we want about how good the bands are or even how good or bad their influence was, but to deny that it is there is impossible.

Most of all, though, I'm still confused as to how influencing bands is a factor in how creative somebody is. In my mind, the most creative band would probably be impossible to emulate, and thus would permeate limited influence. In any case, how does how creative you are translate into influencing famous bands? IMHO these are two wholly separate issues... influence and creativity.

And did someone actually say Sepultura was "the biggest influence on metal?" 'Cause that'd be preposterous but I can't imagine that it actually happened... My bad if it did.

def going with Dinosaur Jr the more and more that I listen to them.

Combined sabbath like riffs with country twang janlge pop punk and noise rock and amazing guitar solos. some how they managed to make it work like crazy.

mmmmmmm, i know were that description of Dinosaur Jr comes from now. From the paragraph starting Dinosaur,on the bands wikipedia page.

^^Okay I have edited a few posts out of this thread, but I still have them for reference if necessary.

I am hoping we can all agree to carry on with a little decorum from this point forward, CN I am asking you to refrain from anymore personal comments, I read all the posts in question and I don't think any outburst was warranted.

I have said in one of my posts in here already, this is a subjective topic and no one has a "More Right" answer than anyone else and a little respect for people even if they disagree is not too much to ask.
