you know one thought did early punk rockers really care what was going on in the real world. my answer no! They were in their own world of f* society we are just going to play and have fun doing it. We could careless who shows up or what you think about it. I'm not sure this initial thought continued into the late 70's and 80's punk.

I agree! That's what I found so charming about the original punk scene. It was like giving Alfred E. Neuman a guitar! :guitar:

The Clash were moving it towards using it to vechile their angst in some more sensible way.

That though is an oxymoron. I don't think punk should or can be sensible. As soon as you try to infuse "sense" into punk, you change the animal beyond recognition.

I never said that. I was actually wondering whether you intended to say that.

Precisely. Although I'm even going so far to argue that punk can have no ideology beyond avoiding having any kind of ideology, i.e. nihilism

But that there is a contradiction! You're agreeing that one of the defining characteristics of punk rock originally was a lack of seriousness. But politics is serious stuff. Ergo punk rockers could not be political.

Surely a more appropriate ideology would be having any ideaology instead of none?

No it's not a contradiction because I said that the lack of serious was a form of rebelion meaning that it's not neccisary, rebellion is (to an extent).

Having a political veiw is a form of rebelion so the lakc of serious is not neccisary

Not for punk. I'm saying that any ideology beyond Alfred E. Neuman's nihilism is inappropriate.

Hmmmmm. So to clear it up for everyone else, let me paraphrase what we're saying:

Foxhound: Punk rock can't be serious about itself. That's the key defining characteristic. This means no politics beyond nihilism (since politics is by nature serious). And because they weren't serious about themselves, the punk rockers of the seventies were rebelling against the more serious musical forms of their older - and politically serious - flower child siblings as well as the politics of these older siblings.

Fisha: Punk rock is about rebellion. The rebellion can take the form of not taking anything seriously including politics. But it can also take the form of having a political view. Punks with political views can therefore be serious about these political views because they're already rebelling by having these views.

So then let me ask you whether only certain set political views are consistent with being punk?

Well if you're holding a politcal veiw which basiclaly says that everything is alright the way it is I wouldn't consider that very punk.

Other than that I'd say that probably everything else is

I see the Dictators mentioned alot in these threads and I love those guys.

Guitar player Ross The Boss went on to form ManOwar with Joey Demaio... Nothing political in their lyrics..just straight up hail and kill.

Actually I seen Ross the boss in concert once & didn't even know it! Around 1980 I went to see the Black & Blue tour (Sabbath & BOC) & opening the show was a band called Shakon' Street with a female singer. I liked them enough to buy their album shortly afterwards & found out Ross the Boss was in the band.

I love the Dictators & speaking of them... Mark "the Animal" Mendoza(Twisted Sister bassist) signed onto them shortly after their first album. On that first album is a tune called "Two Tub Man" (which Mendoza didn't play on) which is a huge influence on Twisted Sister's "Shoot'em Down". The chorus of "Two Tub Man" has the same exact rhythm of "Shoot'em Down".
