Re: Official Tom Petty Thread

I've seen a lot of great openers with Petty. Black Crowes, Allmans, John Mayall. I'm not excited about seeing The Driveby Truckers tbh. I would have freaking flipped if Crosby, Stills & Nash were opening in Pittsburgh. That'd be the top two acts I've seen live the most times. They'd really be a great pair together and I can't see either act too many times, they always kick massive ass. 'Course if I could hand-pick an opener for a Petty show I'd go for The Breeders. That would be my ultimate pop-rock concert right there.

I've only seen Petty once..and it was really one of the best concerts I've ever been to. He put on a great show. This was back in the mid 90's.

I've been playing Tom's debut album the last couple of weeks and it is definitely growing on me, hasn't quite displaced Damn the Torpedoes but it was a damn fine first album.:D

Tom played here last summer, and he was so taken with the response to his concert he promised he will be back here for sure.

My youngest sister texted me last night and told me that Tom Petty was on Saturday Night Live.

I was heartbroken to admit that I didn't have cable, hahaha.

I caught the second song, but I missed the first... I'll have to find it online somewhere, no where is showing reruns on TV:(

@LG

yep, it's definitely a favorite album of mine, not as solid as DTT, but as you said, damn fine.. Here's one of my favorites off of the debut:D
I love the sort of innocent, simplified early rock n roll feel on the debut though, it's got a very youthful feel to it, something that doesn't really happen with any other Petty album:D
Hometown Blues

Very cool performance on this, excellent sound, tones, and dead on, wild playing^^

Well, I was thinking about what I could contribute to this thread beside "Hyuck! I like Tom Petty! He's cool!" :grinthumb and I figured why not a unique Soot perspective on how I got to like him and what the experience of his music coming into my life was.

As cliche as it sounds the first exposure to Tom Petty was through the Free falling video. This was during my first year of exposure to MTV, which was funnily enough at my Grandmothers house. Back when MTV was a massively overwhelming assault of bands and videos. Most of the bands were glammy metal bands like Motley Crue, Skid Row, Slaughter, Winger, Poison, etc. Then I saw this mellow and if I'm going to be honest fugly weird guy Tom Petty with this awesome strumming guitar melody. I loved the song. It had that obligatory hot chick in the video but it was just different. The vocals. The mood. Everything. I'm not sure of the time line after that and when I heard each song but I do remember that Tom fell out of my spotlight after that for quite a bit.

It wasn't until High School where all of us were in our gangsta rap phase (fun times :heheh:)! We all pumped our Snoop Dogg-Doggystyle cassettes until they wore out, Dr. Dre was our G-Funk Godfather and Regulator became our anthem. We blasted these with funky white boy pride! :lmao: Then an odd transition came about. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers came out with their hits compilation and put out the single Mary Janes Last Dance. These same people, maybe because of the Mary Jane reference, were going out and buying Tom Petty cassettes and Tom "Whitey" Petty became our white gangsta similar to what Johnny Cash did as the "Man In Black". This continued to Tom's solo Wildflower c.d. where he took advantage of his new status by dropping lines like "So let's get to the point, let's roll another joint". White boy wannabe's were like "Yeeeaaahhh!" :heheh:

So anyway, I ended up buying the same hit comp and was amazed at how many songs were familiar that I actually liked. Just good solid songs. To be honest though it's exactly halfway through the hits comp where Petty works for me. From "Don't Come Around Here No More" on is where my Petty groove is.

Overall though, great artist, great career, unique style and individual! Glad that I have some of his material in my collection! :grinthumb

Well the radio certainly does because I hear it on there all the time. ;)

Honestly there are fair number of Tom Petty songs (both solo and with The Heartbreakers) that I like more than "Free Fallin'" but it's still a really good song and possibly his most well known these days.

Free Fallin' is no where near my favorite either, It's more of an anthem type thing for me... Everyone knows the words, everyone recognizes it... It's very catchy and fun... Tom has written songs that do all that, but 50x more so, that I like better, but it's like Judas Priest's You Got Another Thing Coming.. just an anthemous song:D
