Tyrannosaurus Rex was formed by Marc Bolan in 1967. As just a two piece with Marc Bolan on guitar and Steve Peregrin Took handling percussion, they earned a rather enthusiastic following in the U.K. underground scene with their brand of surreal acoustic folk that traded heavily on unicorns and other mythological imagery.

It wasn't until Marc Bolan elected to electrify and shorten the band's name to T.Rex that widespread commercial success was obtained, however. Releases such as these vaulted T.Rex to the top of the charts in the early seventies and ushered in the era of glam rock:

T.Rex's existing folky/artsy fan base was outraged by the changes in the band's music and image but, as had been the case with Bob Dylan some years earlier, the verdict of history has been positive.

T.Rex's popularity faded as quickly as it had grown, however, as internal strife among bandmembers took its toll.

Marc Bolan's plans to reunite with percussionists Took and Mickey Finn was curtailed by his untimely death in an automobile accident in 1977. Here's a good biography of the band from the Barnes & Noble website:

Nice thread Hep, and T. Rex has to be among the Best band names ever. I don't have either of those albums, my brother had Electric Warrior and an old girl friend of mine loved Slider but for some unfathomable reason I never picked them up...

I LOVE T. Rex. From 1970 to '73 every single (10 of them) T. Rex released was a top 5 hit, with 4 of them reaching number one and 4 reaching number two.

From 1970 to '73 every single (10 of them) T. Rex released was a top 5 hit, with 4 of them reaching number one and 4 reaching number two.

Well sort of. That was only the case in the U.K. Of those ten singles, only four even made the Billboard Top 100 in the United States and only one made the Top 60, that being "Get It On" which made it to #10.

Well.....yes. Though glam in 70's never really took in the US the way it did in the UK. Though since the UK's charts are their native charts they are the ones I brought up inherently.

T. Rex - Marc Bolan - What can I say? What a babe magnet.

Another great musician taken from us far too soon who has left an undying legacy behind.

Some great vids posted here that brings back some childhood memories, "I love to Boogie" cant help but make you feel good.

Yes Id say that is one of my favourite T Rex tracks, along with Teleagram Sam, Jeepster, Metal Guru, Ride a White Swan, 20th Century Boy, Children of the Revolution.

Don't get confused with Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex. Tyrannosaurus Rex was psychedelic folk band with Bolan and Took, later Took started writing his own songs and wanted duo to perform them, but Bolan refused it. Later with Finn he shorthend the name to T.Rex and completely twist his later image of psychfolker to glam rock beast.

I love T.Rex because they're just simple rock and roll to dance to, nothing philosophical or mindblowing, just simple rock and roll with nice riffs and distortion. I consider them best glam rock act in 70s and it's such a shame Bolan died.
