Maybe Jim was just bored of the not so creative songs he had to sing. Too much internal confliction for a poetic soul IMO. You can tell by his writings, that he was very deep mentally and of course doing any type of mind expansive drug to trip on through his state of mind made him a mental nomad.
My deal is if I don't like a song on a album, I reach over and hit the next button.. Haha!!

This song to me just didn't draw me in. Acappella is not one of Jim's strong points..

As you said one to skip if its not your cup of tea but all bands are like that in that they have some misses and 'stinkers'.
To me that was an experiment in poetry with minimal music set to it....and was probably meant to sound that way. I suspect Jim wanted to do 'weird' things at times but the band probably wanted more melodic mainstream songs to fill the charts than avant garde stuff.

Singer for The Doors​

At the center of The Doors’ mystique is the magnetic presence of singer-Poet Jim Morrison, the leather-clad “Lizard King” who brought the riveting power of a shaman to the microphone.


Morrison was a film student at UCLA when he met keyboardist Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach in 1965. Upon hearing Morrison’s poetry, Manzarek immediately suggested they form a band; the singer took the group’s name from Aldous Huxley’s infamous psychedelic memoir, “The Doors of Perception.”


Constantly challenging censorship and conventional wisdom, Morrison’s lyrics delved into primal issues of sex, violence, freedom and the spirit. He outraged authority figures, braved intimidation and arrest, and followed the road of excess (as one of his muses, the poet William Blake, famously put it) toward the palace of wisdom.


Over the course of six extraordinary albums and countless boundary-smashing live performances, he inexorably changed the course of rock music – and died in 1971 at the age of 27. He was buried in Paris, and fans from around the world regularly make pilgrimages to his grave.


In 1978, the surviving members of the band – keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore – reunited to record the accompanying music for An American Prayer, a compilation of Morrison’s poetry readings. He remains the very template of the rock frontman, and his singing, poetry and Dionysian demeanor continue to inspire artists and audiences around the world.

Funny thing is Magic.. I would call that a stinker too.. I've never heard that song.. Strange as I know some of what I think are true DOORS hits..
These are studio recordings and quite frankly.. A band let loose with the full endorsement of sex drugs and rock and roll.. The engineers are always who can produce the perfect sound. In the case of LA. Woman.. Well.. Me thinks too many drugs were messing things up.. No excuse ya.. I know.. but it's bound to happen on wax..
Riders On The Storm.. Was the one hit off that album that made more sense..

The Doors brought in bass players Marc Benno and Jerry Scheff to play on the album. Scheff came up with the distinctive bass line after Manzarek played him what he had in mind on his keyboard. It took a while to figure out, since it was much harder to play on a bass than a keyboard.

Scheff played bass as a session man for many artists back in the 60s and 70s. He played on most of the tracks on LAWoman if not all.
Benno played rhythm guitar on several tracks.
I think there are a number of fine songs from the lp..... Changeling, Love Her Madly, LAWoman, and Riders of course. I suspect Krieger and Manzarek wrote most of their songs music....so blame them for the stinkers.

Here is another example of what I mean by hit and miss. Jim was a poet…no disputing this fact. Some of his lyrics were actually poetry put to music. Here is where I see the “miss”; some poetry has a tempo & rhythm of its own. Quite a few Doors songs come across as semi-spoken lyrics rather than a song with singing….it’s like Jim has trouble creating a rhythm with the music.

This song is catchy, and it’s not a stinker, but Morrison’s vocals just …well….ruin it. Where is his beautiful voice? To me he sounds annoyed, and could’ve cared less what he sounded like….

I love this song but where is the vocal talent? Where is the melodic baritone? It’s a spoken monotone or shouting, but the band made it work….

I am sure his smoking, drinking, and drugs definitely affected his voice. To me he sounded either tired or annoyed a lot of the time.

I think Peace FRog is just fine the way it is.....that live version of Hello was mediocre for sure but as we know he drank too much, etc.
Even on a bad day Jim sang and was a better front man than most in the history of rock.

BTW...If you want really bad singing there are numerous metal bands out there to check out both old and new.

I agree wholeheartedly! Like I said earlier, I love the LA Woman album. I like The Doors in general.
When I am asked how Jim Morrison affected me as a listener, I am going to tell you exactly how I feel. Jim is an icon for various reasons, but to me it wasn’t his singing voice.
Could he sing, yes, but his vocals are extremely hit and miss……i skip through a lot of songs on The Doors albums. Love Her Madly is a very good example of his singing ability, so is Riders On The Storm, same can be said of People Are Strange, Break On Through, Light My Fire, as well as most of the hits. He had a very deep, sensual, voice.
However, as time went by, his vocal ability declined, right along with his mental capacity. It’s hard to face the reality that Jim Morrison was an eccentric, rebellious, and strange person, who definitely was poetic, but singing was never his strong point.
Jim Morrison’s strong point was his erratic stage behavior, his unpredictable rebellion. His mystique and mystery. His poetry.

IMO, Ray Manzarek was the talent…He is The Doors. RIP.
