Who Is The Most Underated Band, Singer & Guitarist?

Spirit, Focus, Uriah Heep, UFO, Gov't Mule....great bands, kinda undnerrated, I agree...but, they still have a faithful fanbase.

Very interesting choices of singers and guitarists, as well.....

Here's my list...


Band - Although, I can think of many bands -- Steppenwolf, 1968 - 1972 -- to be somewhat underrated. During this period they put out some great and pretty good albums.

Singer - Doug Gray (Marshall Tucker Band)

Guitarist - Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) - although a member of the RRHOF, and a legend to many - nowadays, I consider him kinda of underrated.

Band:

Faith No More - Largely forgotten in the US, they were ten years ahead of their time and heavily influenced many modern bands.

Singer:

David Wanless (Sven Gali) Great vocalist that could sing in all ranges, unfortunately saddled with a medoicre band that made a very alternative second album at a time when no-one wanted to hear it. Now working as a bartender or something.

Guitarist:

Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) - Great sound, influenced by both blues and rock players, blends both exceptionally well. Very underrated player, only popular in Canada.

Band: T. Rex: In the United States T. Rex are just a band that had one song about getting it on but in reality they are directly responsibly for many of the music scenes of the last 40 years. The stripped down music style that Marc Bolan started with T. Rex sparked the glam rock phase that was a direct influence on punk later in the decade. Starting glam also fueled the style of many of the most popular rock bands of the 80's. They also were a big influence on Britpop bands in the early 90's which then went on to inspire indie music that we know today. T. Rex really are FAR more influential than people give them credit for.

Singer: Florence Welch (Florence + the Machine): Florence has a tremendous, sweeping voice that is not only versatile but she is also quite distinctive sounding and I really like how she phrases. I see only great things for her as her career continues to unfold.

Guitarist: Chris Cheney (The Living End): Aussie, Chris Cheney of the Living End fame employs a rockabilly style of playing mix with a great deal of distortion and the energy and grit of punk rock. This give his playing some of the most electric I've ever heard. He is easily one of the finest punk guitarists out there as just an incredible guitarist in general.

Spirit (original) - Here was a band that only recieved modest success though being one of the most eclectic, progressive bands from the late '60's. They covered it all: heavy psych, hard rock, jazz, country, folk, and blues. The band was overshadowed by many other westcoast psych bands at the time.

Mike Harrison (Art>Spooky Tooth) - somewhat unfairly overshadowed by vocalist/keyboardist Gary Wright maybe due to Wright's success as a solo artist with his album Dream Weaver that contained two big hits, "Love Is Alive" and "Dream Weaver" from 1975. Harrison had a wide vocal range from gut-wrenching blues to the soul of gospel and everything in between. No doubt that Spooky Tooth was a better band with these two present however Spooky Tooth was the right band at the wrong time.

Mike Bloomfield (Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, Bob Dylan, Bloomfield, Kooper & Stills) - guitarist Mike Bloomfield's innovating style from the first two Butterfield's Blues Band is legendary, especially the "East-West" title track that opened the flood gates fusing blues, psych, jazz and Indian raga that many other artist would follow. It could be considered the first "psychedelia" track and it's influence cannot be overstated.

He was also very influential in changing Bob Dylan's sound on Highway 61 Revisted in 1965 as he was enlisted as a session guitarist combining folk and blues electrically with sure disbelief of many of Dylan's fans at the time.

He then appeared on the Super Sessions with Al Kooper and Stephen Stills in 1968 that became one of the biggest selling blues-rock albums of all time. Stills was brought in as Bloomfield had a serious drug addiction and his chronic insomnia.

Band: Green Day. People consider them sell-outs, emo, phonies, etc. But the truth is that they have released some of the best albums in the past 20 years (IMO). They can fill arenas, they have one of the best drummers of these times (Tre Cool is brilliant. He is one of the few drummers nowadays that can really make a difference in a band. You can notice his drumming style) and they are an incredible live band. They've had some critical success, but among rock fans they receive a lot of hate, which isn't really fair considering how much they've done.

Singer: Julian Casablancas (The Strokes). Maybe he is not the best singer ever but i consider he brought back the 'effortless cool' to rock&roll. He has this very different attitude like he doesn't really care. But that's kinda his charm too. He's awesome.

Guitarist: John Squire (The Stone Roses). He is a great guitar player, one of the best of his generation. But somehow he has been kinda forgotten, even though he is rightfully respected in the UK. But outside the UK (like anything else related with the Stone Roses) they have been underappreaciated.
