My grandpa had glaucoma, he ended up virtually blind. You need to catch it early and start treatment which will prevent further damage to eyesight. If you have a first degree relative (mother, father, brother or sister) with glaucoma there's a higher risk of you getting it as you get older, my dad has to have regular tests since his father had it but because he was my grandfather my optician says I have the same risk factor as everybody else.

Yes it does sound serious. I don't think he would make up something like that. I know some celebrities wear glasses on stage because they just don't like the lights, but Glaucoma is a whole different thing.
