Two of my uncles were iron workers out in California for many years and they worked on those high-rises for much of their careers. I don't know how they did it. Anything higher than the second story and I'd have been frozen with fear/horror.

The second story would be way too high for me, but these people were desperate for work. Many were injured, or worse, but they were replaced by others who equally needed the money. Similar happened in the UK in mines and shipyards.
