I think an epic rock song could be a long ballad or something that is inspirational that is known the world over.

I always think of songs such as We Are The Champions, The Final Countdown and Eye of the Tiger, Bohemian Rhapsody, Jump, Right Now, Comfortably Numb, Stairway, Achilles Last Stand, Don't Stop Believin, Iron Man, etc. etc. etc.
