There was a programme on TV last night called 'Word Up! - Black American Pop at the BBC'. It was great, but the best clip was 'Going Back to My Roots' by Odyssey from 1981. The song was written by Lamont Dozier of LDL fame at Motown. Odyssey had several number one hits in the UK, despite not charting in the US. I had forgotten just how funky and stylish they were, with the girls' ancient Egyptian look.

This is the same clip from Top of the Pops, introduced by Peter Powell. The guitarist is left-handed! As a heavy and progressive rock fan, I don't know why I like soul and funk, but I love it!

This is Clean up the Ghetto by The Philadelphia International All Stars, including Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Billy Paul, Archie Bell and others. They don't make em any cooler than Lou Rawls.
