Re: Van Der Graaf Generator

VDGG=gothic prog. Very eclectic band. An aquired taste, at least it was for me many years ago. Both Mk. 1&2 are very good. Godbluff and Pawn Hearts are my two favs. Haven't listened to the band much over the last few years. Here's a couple of my fav tunes:

With Robert Fripp:

The Emperor in His War Room

Pawn Hearts (Full Album)

Pawn Hearts is a great album, in particular the second side featuring the suite entitled A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers.
I own an Italian reissue edited in 1987:

Didnt know there was a VDGG thread......a band that even many prog fans have trouble assimilating.
All the early ones are very good imho.....but dont really care for anything after Quiet Zone. The later band just didnt have the same feeling to me.
Many praise 'Pawn Hearts' as their best but its not for the unintiated and can be a very hard lp to get into. I think Godbluff, Still LIfe and World Record are 'easier to enjoy'.

Godbluff is my favorite with 'The Undercover Man' simply killer.

His -Peter Hammill- first 6 or 7 solo lps are good and have the band playing with him....
Silent Corner and Empty Stage as well as Nadirs Big Chance are very good .

They had their own audience and I have a 'best of' cd on Virgin records of the band but I got that cd mainly cos it has Theme One on it that I recall use to open BBC Radio One at the dawn of the day at 5:30 am back in 1972 when I was already up and going out to work just after 5:30 am so that 'tune' brings back memories..
