Re: Who is the most underrated band of the 80's?
husker du definitely deserves more attention.
'zen arcade' is quite possibily THE album that most influenced the 'alternative' rock boom of the 90s. you know the whole thing was done in like 3 days right? writing / recording / mixing the whole bit. it's like the whole thing just came out of all 3 members in one of the most productive long weekends ever.
now as for extreme being underrated? come on. unpopular today perhaps. underrated definitely not. shit, how many guitar magazine covers did nuno bettencourt do between 89-92? while none of their singles topped 'more than words' their singles always got substantial airplay until nirvana replaced technique with emotion.
I would definitely say Husker Du. Don't get me wrong. REM is (was) a fantastic band. While they represented the bright side to alternative rock, Husker Du was little bit more serious and much more darker. Zen Arcade is a masterpiece and nothing like it has been made since or before it. Though they may never make it into the RnR Hall Of Fame they still solidified their place in rock's history.
