LINK: Best 2012 Songs (So Far)
The best 2012 songs competition is going to be quite fierce, if the pace and quality of new and previously unheard tunes released so far this year is maintained all the way until next December. From the triumphant returns of Van Halen and Bruce Springsteen to the discovery of an unheard Doors song, it's as if Christmas never ended. Here's our choices for the Best 2012 Songs (so far):
5. 'She Smells So Nice'
The Doors
It's been 40 years since singer Jim Morrison died, and even after all that time, his former bandmates were still able to find this somehow previously unreleased little gem to kick off a massive re-issue campaign for their 'L.A. Woman' album. The song is an off-the-cuff but quite charming countrified blues number featuring “Mr. Mojo Risin'' in full roar.
4. 'Mud Flap Mama'
Leslie West (Feat. Slash)
Although he's been in the news lately primarily (and understandably) for having part of his leg amputated following a health scare, it would be a shame for Leslie West's highly enjoyable new album 'Unusual Suspects' to be pushed aside in people's minds too far. Special guest stars pepper the album throughout, including longtime Guns N' Roses axeman Slash, who adds his magic to this downright swampy stomper, a legitimate early contender for the best 2012 song of the year.
3. 'Different Devil'
Chickenfoot
Rightfully unafraid of the shadow cast by their back-on-the-scene former bandmates in Van Halen (see below,) Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony and their Chickenfoot bandmates put aside the riff-rock for a minute and chose this surprisingly nuanced song as their first single of 2012. The song has clearly struck a chord with our readers, who've given 'Different Devil' a big lead in a head to head battle against VH's 'Tattoo.'
2. 'We Take Care of Our Own'
Bruce Springsteen
If any E Street fans out there needed a big rousing anthem to cheer them up after last year's loss of beloved saxophonist Clarence Clemons, Springsteen certainly delivered with this early best 2012 song candidate. This retro-sounding number from his upcoming album 'Wrecking Ball' features pianos and bells straight out of his '70s bag of tricks, as he vows that a spirit of community will see us through both personal and worldwide tough times.
1. 'Outta Space'
Van Halen
The first single from Van Halen's comeback album, 'Tattoo,' may not have been the best re-introduction for longtime fans, but as many of you have probably heard for yourselves by now, there's plenty of classic VH sonics to be found on the rest of the record. It would be impossible for us not to pick one of them as the best 2012 song so far; the hard part is choosing which one gets the honor. Right now, the jaw-dropping drum and guitar interplay of Van Halen brothers Alex and Eddie throughout 'Outta Space' is stuck on replay in our system — check back tomorrow and it could easily be 'As Is' or 'Big River.'
