Todd was on fire back then as a producer and somehow managed to release some of his best material as well (A Wizard A True Star, Todd, Initiation).

1944 Thomas Boggs (drummer for The Box Tops) is born in Wynne, Arkansas, but is raised mostly in Memphis, Tennessee.
1952 Stewart Copeland is born in Alexandria, Virginia. He spends his youth in Lebanon and then England. After moving back to the States to attend college, he returns to the UK to play drums for Curved Air and then The Police.
1967 Arlo Guthrie debuts "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival. The song runs 18 minutes long and tells a true (but greatly exaggerated) story about how he was arrested one Thanksgiving morning for illegal dumping. The ticket later made him ineligible for the draft, keeping him out of the Vietnam War. Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, and Tom Paxton also play the festival this day.
1996 Styx drummer John Panozzo dies at age 47 when his liver fails after years of drinking.

1981 US singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, who had success in the 70s with 'Taxi’, ‘W-O-L-D’ and a No. 1 ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’, was killed aged 38 suffering a cardiac arrest while driving on a New York expressway. His car was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, causing the gas tank to explode.
2012 Jon Lord, the former keyboard player with Deep Purple, died aged 71. Lord was a co-founder of Deep Purple in 1968 and co-wrote many of the group's songs including Smoke On The Water. He also played with bands including Whitesnake. He had been receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer since last August.
2014 Blues guitarist Johnny Winter died at the age of 70 in Zurich, just days after playing at the Lovely Days Festival in Austria. Winter, who was instantly recognizable by his long white hair, worked with some of the greatest bluesmen, producing several albums for his childhood hero Muddy Waters - with whom he won a number of Grammys.

1965, The Who play the Cheltenham Festival in Gloucestersire, England, along with The Yardbirds, Shades of Blue and The Hellions. It is one of the oldest music festivals in Britain, held annually in Cheltenham in June/July since 1945.
1993, The first of the three day Phoenix Festival in England started, featuring Sonic Youth, Faith No More, The Black Crowes, Julian Cope, Pop Will Eat Itself, Radiohead, Living Colour, Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, tickets £49 ($83.)It was held at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon.

1966: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker announced that they were forming a band called Cream. Earlier that year, Clapton—previously of the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers—had met Baker, then the drummer for the Graham Bond Organisation. Baker had been looking to move on from his current group, and offered Clapton to join his new, unnamed band. Clapton agreed on the condition that bassist and former Graham Bond Organisation member Jack Bruce also join. Despite previous quarrels between Baker and Bruce, the three joined together and called themselves “The Cream,” due to their reputations as “the cream of the crop” in the British music scene.
1970: Creedence Clearwater Revival released their fifth album, “Cosmo’s Factory.” The name of the album came from the warehouse in Berkeley, California where the band rehearsed early in their career. It was dubbed “The Factory” by drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford because bandleader John Fogerty made them practice there almost every day. It became the band’s most successful LP, their second #1 in America, only #1 in the UK, and topped the charts in several other countries.
2002: Dave Matthews Band released their fifth studio album, Busted Stuff.
2014: Yes released their twenty-first studio album, Heaven & Earth. It was the band’s first album with lead vocalist Jon Davison and the final album to feature founding bassist Chris Squire before his death in 2015

1947 Mick Tucker (drummer for Sweet) is born in Harlesden, North West London, England.
1947 Wolfgang Flur (of Kraftwerk) is born in Frankfurt, Germany.
1949 Terence "Geezer" Butler (bassist, lyricist for Black Sabbath) is born in Aston, Birmingham, England.
1991 Fourteen years after the deadly crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Baton Rouge-bound aircraft, the surviving members of the band, reunited under the name "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991," return to the Louisiana city to kick off a new tour. Shirts sold for the event read, "Baton Rouge! After 14 years! We're finally here..."
2009 Gordon Waller of Peter and Gordon ("A World Without Love") dies of a heart attack at age 64.
