1987: Five years after their break-up, The Doobie Brothers kicked off a mini-reunion tour at the Sports Arena in San Diego, California. The band’s reunion began when drummer Keith Knudsen persuaded several former members to join him at a benefit concert for veteran’s. Finding that tickets were in high demand, the single show quickly evolved into a 12-city tour and the success of the tour lead to the permanent reformation of the group.

A then 19-year-old Newby joined the band in December, 1960 after they returned to Liverpool from Germany and needed a bassist, as Stuart Sutcliffe decided to remain in Hamburg to focus on his art career. After just four shows, Newby was invited to return to Germany with the group, but decided to focus on his academic career instead. He would go on to become a math teacher at Droitwich Spa High School in Worcestershire, England and always maintained that he was happy with the choice he made.
