1969 Steve Marriott officially announced that he was quitting The Small Faces. In 1973, he told The L.A. Times "I left the band when I realized the gimmickry album tracks we were making and the record company was releasing as singles, like "Itchycoo Park" (US #16) and "Lazy Sunday" (UK #2), were doing much better than the things we really dug." He would go on to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, while the remaining members, Ronnie Lane, Kenny Jones and Ian McLagan joined forces with two former members of The Jeff Beck Group, singer Rod Stewart and guitarist Ronnie Wood to continue as Faces.

1965, Bob Dylan’s single “Subterranean Homesick Blues” was released in the US. The lead track from his Bringing It All Back Home album, gave Dylan his first top 40 hit. Subterranean Homesick Blues is also noted for its innovative film clip, in what became one of the first modern promotional film clips. The clip was shot in an alley behind the Savoy Hotel in London, the cue cards which Dylan holds were written by Donovan, Allen Ginsberg, and Dylan himself.

1968: Concert promoter Bill Graham opened The Fillmore East in New York City’s Lower East Side neighborhood as the companion venue to the Fillmore Auditorium, and its successor, the Fillmore West, in San Francisco. The Fillmore East quickly became known as “The Church of Rock and Roll,” with two-show, triple-bill concerts several nights a week, featuring artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Cream, the Mothers of Invention, the Grateful Dead, Taj Mahal, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Allman Brothers Band, Joe Cocker, Derek and the Dominos, Johnny Winter, and many others. Numerous live albums were also recorded at the venue due to the auditorium’s excellent acoustics. The Fillmore East closed after only three years in June of 1971 with a final concert featuring several special guests that was broadcast live over New York radio.

1980: Pat Benatar released her cover of John Mellencamp’s debut single, “I Need a Lover,” as the first single from her debut album, In the Heat of the Night.
