1943 Eric Haydock (original bass guitarist for The Hollies) is born in Stockport, Cheshire, England.

1947 Dave Davies (lead guitarist for The Kinks) is born in Fortis Green, London, England.

1949 Arthur Kane (bass guitarist for New York Dolls) is born in The Bronx, New York City.

1979 20 years after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Del Shannon and The Drifters perform a tribute show in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Holly's last concert took place.

2004 - American woodwind, keyboard player and vocalist Cornelius Bumpus died of a heart attack at age 58. He toured with The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan.

2008 - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed during the halftime-show of Super Bowl XLII at the University of Phoenix Stadium. They played 'American Girl', 'I Won't Back Down', 'Free Fallin'' and 'Runnin' Down a Dream'.

1986, Dire Straits were at number one on the UK album charts with their fifth studio album Brothers in Arms. With ten weeks at the top chart spot, the album is the seventh best-selling album in UK chart history. It won two Grammy Awards in 1986, and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. Brothers in Arms also spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the US, and thirty-four weeks at number one on the Australian Album Chart.

This Day In Rock History: February 3rd


1959, 22 year old Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, aged 17, died in a crash shortly after take-off from Clear Lake, Iowa, the pilot of the single-engined Beechcraft Bonanza plane was also killed. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tourbus. All three were traveling to Fargo, North Dakota, for the next show on their Winter Dance Party Tour which Holly had set – covering 24 cities in three weeks, to make money after the break-up of his band, The Crickets, last year.

1979, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, The Blues Brothers went to number one on the US album chart with Briefcase Full Of Blues.

1948 Vincent Furnier, who will become better known as Alice Cooper, is born in Detroit.

1951 Phil Ehart (drummer for Kansas) is born in Coffeyville, Kansas.

1952 Jerry Shirley (drummer for Humble Pie) is born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, England.

1977, This was the 25th anniversary show of TV’s American Bandstand, which began as a local program on WFIL-TV, Channel 6 in Philadelphia on October 7, 1952.

1982, Scottish singer Alex Harvey died of a heart attack while waiting to take a ferry back to shore after performing a concert with his new band, the Electric Cowboys. In an ambulance on the way to the hospital, he suffered a second heart attack, this one fatal. It occurred on the day before his 47th birthday, in Zeebrugen, Belgium. Formed Alex Harvey Big Soul Band in 1959 and then mid 1960’s band Tear Gas. He had the 1975 UK number seven single with Sensational Alex Harvey Band “Delilah” and 1975 album Next.

1991: Queen released their fourteenth studio album, Innuendo. It was the band’s last album released in lead singer Freddie Mercury’s lifetime and their most recent LP composed of entirely new material.

2008: On the 40th anniversary of the song’s recording, “Across the Universe” by the Beatles became the first song beamed into space, with the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration transmitting the recording in the direction of the North Star, Polaris, 431 light years away. The transmission had been arranged by Beatles historian Martin Lewis, and also coincided with the celebrations of NASA’s 50th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the launch of America’s first satellite, Explorer 1.

This Day In Rock History: Feb 4th

2017 Black Sabbath played the final show of their nearly fifty year career with a two hour send-off in their home town of Birmingham, England. Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, and bassist Geezer Butler played a fifteen song set, ending with their first hit, "Paranoid". As ticker tape and balloons fell, Ozzy thanked the fans and waved goodbye.
