1951, Born on this day, John 'Cougar' Mellencamp, American singer and songwriter, who had the 1982 US No.1 and UK No.25 single Jack And Diane, and the 1982 US No.1 album American Fool. He holds the record for the most tracks by a solo artist to hit Number One on the US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks Chart, and has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning one, as Best Male Rock Performer for Hurts So Good.

1968, Born on this day, Thom Yorke, vocals, guitar, keyboards, Radiohead. Their 1993 debut single 'Creep' was initially unsuccessful, but it became a worldwide hit several months after the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey. Their 1997 album OK Computer appeared in many 1997 critics' lists and listener polls for best album of the year. In 2006, Yorke released his debut solo album, The Eraser, and in 2009 formed Atoms for Peace.

1945 Rock musician Kevin Godley (of 10cc) is born in Prestwich, Lancashire, England

1949 David Hope (bass guitarist for Kansas) is born in Topeka, Kansas.

1953 Tico Torres (drummer for Bon Jovi) is born Hector Juan Samuel Torres in New York.

1965 Manfred Mann become one of the first Western bands to play behind the Iron Curtain when they do a show in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia.

1987 Exodus releases their second studio album, Pleasures of the Flesh.

1990 Soundgarden performs at the Gathering of the Tribes festival in Costa Mesa, California. In the crowd is Eddie Vedder, who the next day flies to Seattle and meets his Pearl Jam band mates for the first time. Vedder and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden end up recording vocals together that day for the song "Hunger Strike" as part of the Temple of the Dog project.

2014 Weezer releases their ninth studio album, Everything Will Be Alright in the End. It's the band's first album to be released by Republic Records.

1964, Roy Orbison was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Oh Pretty Woman', his third UK No.1. The title was inspired by Orbison's wife Claudette interrupting a conversation to announce she was going out; when Orbison asked if she was okay for cash, his co-writer Bill Dees interjected "A pretty woman never needs any money."

1966, Cream drummer Ginger Baker collapsed during a gig at Sussex University, England after playing a 20 minute drum solo. He later recovered in a local hospital.

1940, Born on this day, John Lennon singer, songwriter, guitarist, The Beatles sold over 20m singles in the UK (1962-1970), and scored more UK & US No.1 albums than any other group. 1967 'Sgt. Pepper's' is the UK's biggest selling album ever. In 1990 Lennon's song 'Imagine' was played simultaneously in 130 countries to commemorate what would've been Lennon's 50th birthday. He was shot dead in New York by Mark Chapman on 8th December 1980.

1944, Born on this day, John Entwistle, bassist with The Who, nicknamed The Ox. The Who scored the 1965 UK No.2 single 'My Generation' plus over 20 other UK Top 40 hits, as well as 16 US Top 40 singles. In the early days of The Who, once the lineup had stabilized and it was settled that Roger Daltrey was to be the front man, Entwistle started to dye his fair hair black, and continued to so do until the 1980s. Entwistle died in Las Vegas on 27th June 2002, one day before the scheduled first show of The Who's US tour.
