1989 - Bruce Springsteen stopped in a small salon in Prescott, AZ, and played a few songs with the band. He overheard a woman talking about financial problems concerning her medical bills. A week later she received a check for $100,000 from Springsteen.

1973, Grand Funk Railroad went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'We're An American Band', the group's first of two US chart toppers.

2004, Keith Moon's five-piece drum kit, custom-made for The Who drummer in 1968, sold for £120,000 pounds ($215,772) in London to an American collector, setting a world auction record for a set of drums.

1948 Guitarist Mike Pinera (of Iron Butterfly) is born in Tampa, Florida.

1963 Primus singer/bassist Les Claypool is born in Richmond, California.

1966 Jimi Hendrix meets the final member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, bassist Noel Redding, when Redding unsuccessfully auditions for Eric Burdon's new Animals lineup at the Birdland club in London.

1967 Mickey Hart joins Grateful Dead as its new drummer.

1968 Bassist Brad Smith (of Blind Melon) is born in West Point, Mississippi.

1976 Rush release their first live album, the double LP All The World's A Stage.

1977 David Bowie sets up a trust fund for Rolan Bolan, the son of the recently deceased Marc Bolan, Bowie's close friend and front man of glam rock band T. Rex.

1992 Alice In Chains unfurl their second studio album, "Dirt." The set sells over 5-million copies.

2009 Alice In Chains release their comeback album, "Black Gives Way To Blue." Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush), the set features singer William DuVall (replacing the late Lane Staley). The album is the first for the band in nearly 14 years

2011 Scientists at Goldsmiths University claim Queen's "We Are The Champions" is the catchiest song ever written. They conducted research to find out what makes a great sing-along song. The criteria was based on four key elements: Long and detailed musical phrases, multiple pitch changes in a song's 'hook', male vocalists, and voices making a noticeable vocal effort.

1964 Robby Takac (bassist/vocalist for The Goo Goo Dolls) is born in Buffalo, New York.

1971 Isaac Hayes releases "Theme From Shaft."

1982 Bruce Springsteen releases Nebraska, an album made up of tunes Bruce recorded on a 4-track tape machine in his home studio.

2002 The Rolling Stones release Forty Licks.

1947, Born on this day, Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld), English guitarist, singer, songwriter, best known as the lead singer of the glam rock band T. Rex. Bolan was one of the pioneers of the glam rock movement of the 1970s. He had the 1971 UK No.1 single 'Hot Love', plus over 20 other UK Top 40 singles, and the 1972 US No.10 single Bang A Gong, (Get It On). Bolan was killed in a car accident on 16th September 1977 aged 29 a fortnight before his 30th birthday.

1947 Martin Turner (bassist/lead vocalist for Wishbone Ash) is born in Torquay, Devon, England.

1970 Janis Joplin makes her last recordings, singing "Mercedes Benz," which in included on her posthumous Pearl album acapella. She also records a goofy version of "Happy Trails" as a birthday present for John Lennon. Joplin dies three days later.

1970, Pink Floyd released their fifth, and first UK No.1 album Atom Heart Mother in the UK. The original album cover shows a cow standing in a pasture with no text, nor any other clue as to what might be on the record. Storm Thorgerson, inspired by Andy Warhol's famous ‘cow wallpaper,’ has said that he simply drove out into a rural area near Potters Bar, England and photographed the first cow he saw. The cow's owner identified her name as ‘Lulubelle III’.
